FORT WAYNE — A pair of one-run wins got the Rockets to the semifinal.
The same margin ended their hopes of reaching the title game.
A squeeze bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning handed the Portland Rockets a 3-2 loss to the South Bend Royals on Sunday in the Firecracker Classic semifinal at Carrington Field.
The Royals went on to win the championship with a 2-1 victory over the Fort Wayne Jackers, who hosted the tournament.
One run in each of the fourth and fifth innings tied the game for South Bend. Portland (4-8), which defeated the Lexington Copperheads 4-3 Friday at Runkle-Miller Field and topped the Mishawaka Brewers by the same score Saturday afternoon, needed just three outs to force extra innings.
With a runner on third base, Mitch Waters entered the game in relief to pitch. The Royals squeezed home the winning run on Waters’ first offering.
Chris Gaines hit an RBI single and Carsten White knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice during the second inning to give Portland its 2-0 advantage.
Cody Krumlauf finished with a double and a single, while Zach Tanner, Justin Greene and Waters all singled too as Portland held a 6-5 edge in hits over the Royals.
Ian Schilling was charged with the loss, as he was responsible for the game-winning run. He struck out two, walked a pair and surrendered two hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Zeth Tanner hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning of Friday’s contest with Lexington. It was his only hit of the game and it turned out to be the difference. Dustin Lewis had a single and an RBI, and Zach Tanner also drove in a run. Malave Bettinger, Payton Heniser, White and Waters each contributed a single. Codey Harrison earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits over five innings of work. He struck out nine while walking seven batters. Waters struck out four over the final two frames for the save.
Elias Inskeep ripped a two-run double and Lewis hit an RBI single as the Rockets scored three times to tie the score at three apiece with the Brewers on Saturday. An RBI single from Bettinger in the top of the eighth gave Portland the win.
The Rockets return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Northeast Kekionga at Indiana Tech before returning home for a doubleheader with the Fort Wayne Expos at 1 p.m. Saturday.
