BURLINGTON, Iowa — Sam Keating didn’t make it out of the third inning.
The offense was mostly absent.
Keating gave up five runs in just 2 2/3 innings, the Fort Wayne offense managed just two hits and didn’t have a runner reach third base Thursday in a 5-0 loss to the Burlington Bees at Community Field.
Burlington (9-11, 48-42 overall), an affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, scored the only run it needed in the bottom of the first inning when Kevin Maitan hit a solo home run — his sixth of the season.
An inning later, Alvaro Rubalcaba singled home Justin Jones to make it 2-0. Francisco Del Valle ripped a two-run home run in the third inning, and Rubalcaba registered his second RBI of the day with a single to right field.
Rubalcaba finished with three hits, and Del Valle had two. Tim Millard also singled.
Keating, who fell to 3-6 on the season, allowed five earned runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked a pair.
Fort Wayne relievers Adrian Martinez (4 1/3 innings) and Henry Henry combined to allow just two hits over the final 5 1/3 frames. Martinez fanned five while Henry had one punch-out.
Grant Little singled for Fort Wayne (6-14, 39-49) in the second inning, but he was left stranded. Agustin Ruiz walked in the fourth inning before Blake Hunt grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The TinCaps’ best chance to score came in the seventh as Little worked a one-out walk, and Michael Curry singled with two outs to put a pair of runners on base. But Luke Becker, who made his TinCap debut the night before after being called up from the Tri-City Dust Devils, watched strike three to end the threat.
In all, the TinCaps struck out seven times.
Curry also walked in the fifth inning to reach base twice.
Fort Wayne, which has lost 10 of its last 13 games, can avoid a series sweep with a win tonight. Left-handed pitcher Omar Cruz, who boasts a 5.19 ERA and has not factored into a decision so far in his two appearances, is set to take the bump for the TinCaps, and the Bees will counter with Hector Yan (3-2, 3.38 ERA).
