Track project moving forward
Water damage at southeast corner delayed installation of new surface
FORT RECOVERY — A new track will be installed. There was just a bit more work required than expected to make it happen.
High school principal Bill Overla updated Fort Recovery School Board about the track project at its meeting Monday, reporting that a section of the base needed to be repaired before the new surface could be put in place.
Overla told board members Greg LeFevre, Jose Faller, Mitch Ervin, Mike Grube and Nick Wehrkamp that when All American Tracks removed the old track surface it found an unstable base at the southeast corner of Barrenbrugge AthleticPark. He said water had led to instability, adding that there had been issues with both drainage and sprinklers in that area though the specific cause was unclear.
The issue caused a delay, with All American Tracks moving on to other jobs in order to allow Mercer Asphalt & Sealcoat time to repair about 250 feet of the track’s base. The new base, which was estimated at a cost of $5,000, needs three weeks to cure before the new surface is applied.
All American Tracks will return to Fort Recovery within the next few weeks to put the polyurethane surface in place. The surface, at a cost of $149,938, is expected to last 20 to 25 years as compared to the previous latex surface that lasted six years.
In other business, the board:
•Got an update from Overla on his pilot program using Edmentum in order to raise test scores. He noted that the school’s performance index improved to 99.7 from the previous 96 (out of 120) and that he hopes to expand use of the program this year.
•Heard from middle school principal Tony Stahl that five staff members will be undergoing free project-based learning training in August in St. Henry. It is part of an effort to provide students with more hands-on learning experiences.
•Approved the preschool rates for the 2019-20 school year at $88 for two days, $150 for three days and $193 for four days for in-district students and $103, $165 and $208, respectively, for out-of-district students. Those numbers represent a cost increase for three- and four-day students, but a decrease of $7 (in-district) and $12 (out-of-district) for two-day students.
•Tabled a decision on a tax increment financing (TIF) exemption for an Erastus-Durbin Road improvement project in connection with an Acheson Poultry expansion. Board members wanted to gather more information prior to their September deadline for making a decision on the issue.
•Approved a personal service contract with Kim Grube at $188 per day, not to exceed 10 days, for Aug. 1 through Aug. 21. Grube is retiring as of July 31, but has agreed to stay on as needed until her replacement is hired. Interviews for that position concluded Monday.
•OK’d updates to the student and staff handbooks. One such change included language banning “weapons and dangerous items” from the previous “illegal weapons” in order to address pocket knives, which are not allowed at school.
•Learned that a program through Energy Optimizers has achieved the required cost savings. The program, which involved new LED lighting in the elementary/middle school gym and auditeria, resulted in energy savings of $23,314 (adjusted for weather and other variables) in its first year.
•Approved the following: incoming superintendent Larry Brown as the district’s trustee on the Mercer-Auglaize Benefit Trust board; the resignation of Beth Guggenbiller as a preschool aide; the payment of invoices for $4,927.90 Jutte’s Landscaping and $415.59 to CINTAS, both of which required approval because they were from the previous fiscal year; Wehrkamp as the board’s delegate to Ohio School Board Association’s Capital Conference in November with LeFevre as the alternate; Vicki Schmitz as public records officer; and additional appropriations and transfers, including $350,000 to the permanent improvement fund from the general fund.
•Accepted a $1,300 donation from Fort Recovery Community Foundation to Fort Recovery FFA.
•Was introduced to new social studies teacher Charlie Vasey, who will also coach football and basketball.
•Approved Nancy Abels, Denise Bruns, Marilyn Fortkamp, Kim Grube, Sheri Grover, Lacy Heinrichs, Kathleen Heitkamp, Angie Homan, Tammie Heiser, Janet Hummel, Alicia Jutte, Kathleen Jutte, Vickie Jutte, Sandra Kaiser, Lisa Lennartz, Shelly McCain, Charlene Pearson, Norma Pottkotter, Nancy Reinhard, Barb Sautbine, Kate Timmerman, Jill Walter and Angie Will as substitute teachers for the 2019-20 school year.
•Heard from elementary school superintendent Kelli Thobe that an open building is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 19.
•Set a records destruction meeting for 6:15 p.m. Aug. 19 prior to the board’s regular meeting.
