FORT WAYNE — Ryan Weathers doesn’t waste much time between pitches.
After giving up consecutive hits to start the game, he only allowed one more over the next 20 batters.
Six runs and slightly more than two hours later, the TinCaps opened their homestand with a win.
Weathers, the seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft, matched his longest start of the season by tossing six innings and he got plenty of help offensively Wednesday as the Fort Wayne TinCaps defeated the Peoria Chiefs 6-2 at Parkview Field.
The 2-hour, 12-minute game was the shortest of the season for the TinCaps (8-17, 41-52).
Peoria (4-21, 34-60), an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, opened the game with a double from Brendan Donovan and a single by Delvin Perez. A Brady Whalen groundout put the Chiefs on top, 1-0.
Fort Wayne responded quickly with two runs in the home half of the frame and never relinquished the advantage. The TinCaps evened the score on a passed ball with bases loaded, and Justin Lopez, who finished with his second three-RBI game of the season, knocked in Agustin Ruiz to give the home team the lead.
Three consecutive TinCaps singles started the third inning. Blake Hunt and Lopez kept the hitting going with back-to-back singles. Hunt drove in one run and Lopez knocked in a pair. With runners at the corners, Luke Becker grounded into a double play that allowed Hunt to score from third.
Ethan Skender, Ruiz and Lopez had two hits apiece. Tucupita Marcano and Jawuan Harris each added hits.
Donovan homered off Weathers in the sixth inning, but the lefty was otherwise solid on the mound. He allowed two runs on three hits, struck out five and walked one. He lowered his ERA to 3.36 and improved his record to 3-4.
Cody Tyler (two innings) and Jose Quezada combined to throw three perfect innings of relief.
Game two of the three-game series is slated for 7:05 p.m. tonight. Sam Keating (3-6, 5.55 ERA) will take the rubber for Fort Wayne, while Peoria is set to counter with Colin Schmid (3-5, 4.79 ERA).
