FORT WAYNE — Jawuan Harris had a career night Thursday in leading the TinCaps to the largest comeback win in franchise history.
He was the hero again three days later.
Harris hit a scorching ground ball that Wander Javier couldn’t field cleanly and Justin Lopez scored safely from third base in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Fort Wayne TinCaps an 8-7 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernals on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.
The win, which moved the TinCaps to 10-19 in the second half and 43-54 overall, came after the team trailed 5-1 in the fourth inning and rallied to take a two-run lead before having it vanish two frames later.
Lopez began the home half of the ninth inning with a single to right field, and Luke Becker followed with a bunt single to the right side of the infield. Lee Solomon sacrificed himself with a bunt, moving Lopez to third base and Becker to second.
Tyler Benson walked to load the bases ahead of a Tucupita Marcano lineout to left field that failed to advance the runners.
Harris, who had a game-tying grand slam Thursday as the TinCaps erased an 11-2 deficit to beat the Peoria Chiefs 12-11 for the largest comeback win in team history, ripped a 1-1 offering from J.T. Perez to Javier, who attempted a back-handed snag but didn’t come up with the potential inning-ending play.
Lopez scored, and the TinCaps pounced on Harris in shallow right field after the win.
In his last six games, Harris is batting .409 with seven RBIs and six runs.
Cedar Rapids (17-12, 56-43), a Minnesota Twins affiliate that secured a Midwest League wild card playoff spot by finishing second in the Western Division, nabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning and were ahead 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Fort Wayne went out front by scoring six times, including a two-run double from Harris and a two-run triple from catcher Juan Fernandez.
The TinCap advantage was short-lived, however, as the Kernals plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to set the table for the Harris heroics.
Fort Wayne and Cedar Rapids complete their three-game set at 7:05 p.m. tonight. Lefty Joey Cantillo (6-3), who leads the MWL with a 2.03 ERA and is second with 105 strikeouts, takes the hill for the TinCaps. The Kernals will counter with Tyler Palm (2-5, 3.82 ERA).
