It’s Anthem.
Jay School Board members selected the school corporation’s health insurance provider at a special meeting at 7 a.m. today.
The move came after a second survey of school employees conducted at the request of those concerned that a switch to IU Health would leave them with few in-network options for medical care.
Superintendent Jeremy Gulley noted that the initial survey, which favored IU Health, had far fewer responses than the second go-around.
“The first survey had 184 responders,” Gulley said via email. “The second survey had 279 responders.”
The first survey also included a third option — Cigna — which the board felt could have distorted the results.
With Cigna removed and an increase in participation, the new survey results were clear: Anthem was preferred by 60 percent, while 40 percent preferred IU Health.
“It was a clear preference,” said Gulley.
After the survey, he noted, Anthem revised its proposal. While premiums for Plan B coverage will still increase, premiums for Plans C and D will drop.
The result is an overall one percent drop in premiums from current levels.
That information was not received until after the survey went out,” Gulley added.
While IU Health’s proposed premiums were still lower, a number of school employees had expressed concern that their current health care providers were not part of the IU Health network.
Current Anthem monthly premiums for single person coverage under Plan B are $895.18. That will jump a little over two percent to $913.37 in September.
Meanwhile, premiums under Plan C and Plan D, which have higher deductibles, will drop more than two percent.
Plan C single person coverage premiums are currently $786.99 per month. That will drop to $767.66 per month in September.
Plan D single person coverage premiums are currently $687.80 per month. That will dlrop to $672.27 per month in September.
Balancing premiums against coverage was at the heart of the question, board members noted earlier this month.
Gulley commended those involved in the insurance selection process: The committee, the board as well as employees who approached the board to express their concerns.
“Everyone did their part in this process,” he said. “I am proud of all.”
“The advice we had to delay the decision was good advice,” said board president Phil Ford.
In other action this morning, the board approved the hiring of Christine Addington as a guidance counselor at East Jay Middle School.
