The 60th iteration of the Rockets began with a couple blemishes.

The Portland Rockets, who are celebrating their 60th season this year, began the 2019 campaign with a pair of losses.

Portland (0-2) trailed 8-0 after two innings Friday but had its rally come up short in a 16-8 loss to the Fort Wayne Expos at DeKalb High School.

On Sunday, the Rockets lost a shootout to the Grand Lake Mariners 17-13 at Montgomery Field in Celina, Ohio.

Dustin Lewis hit a home run against the Expos for the Rockets’ first run of the season, and Zach Tanner also homered in the season-opening loss, which saw Portland use a half dozen pitchers.

Cody Krumlauf and Tanner both hit a home run against the Mariners. Tristan Becker, Malave Bettinger, Mitch Waters and Tanner each had two hits in the setback to Grand Lake. 



Stars 11th

BLUFFTON — The South Adams High School boys golf team had its season end Monday as it took 11th in the sectional meet at Timber Ridge Golf Club.

Eastbrook shot 331 to claim the team championship. Host Norwell finished with 334 for runner-up, two strokes better than Bellmont.

The Starfires’ score of 445 was 13 strokes better than last place Marion.

Blaine Harruff posted the best score of the day for the Starfires, narrowly missing double digits with his score of 101. He made par four times.

Landon Lenwell, the No. 4 golfer, posted a 109 with one par for the team’s second-best score. Spencer Fear was third on the team as he carded 116, and Josh Hoffstetter completed the team total with 120.



Berne edges Fisher

First Bank of Berne edged Fisher Meats 12-11 Monday in the Minor softball division of Portland Junior League.

Natalie May and Alexis Sibray both doubled in the win for Berne. Emily Young singled and scored three times. Carley Trinidad, Sibray and May scored two runs each.

Chloe Byrum doubled and singled for Fisher, which got doubles from Calie Yates and Kayleigh Stevenson as well. 



Loy’s drops two

Loy’s Realty lost two games on Friday in PJL’s Sandy Koufax division.

It lost to Dunkirk 13-5, then came up short in a 6-4 setback to Local 1620.

Tarron Bentz finished with a home run, a double and four singles on the day. Bryce Wenk doubled, Qadon Ferrell knocked two singles while Jeremiah Canterbury, Cam Hoover and Austin Curtis all had hits.

Kenton Coleman homered and singled for Dunkirk. Jarron Alexander collected a double, a single and a walk.

Hunter LeMaster went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles for Local 1620.
