FORT WAYNE — The TinCaps had to rally to begin the series Tuesday against the Captains.

A day later, they had to hang on.

The Fort Wayne TinCaps built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings Wednesday and held on as the Lake County Captains tried to return the rally magic from the night before but prevailed 3-2 against the Cleveland Indians affiliate.

Fort Wayne (28-29), which scored the final four runs of a 4-3 win Tuesday, staked its lead in the first inning when Blake Hunt singled up the middle to score Aldemar Burgos, who doubled earlier in the frame.

The TinCaps tripled their advantage thanks to a throwing error by Lake County starter Cody Morris, and Xavier Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to push the score to 3-0.

Jose Fermin put the Captains (34-24), who have lost three in a row, on the board with a solo home run in the third inning. It was his fourth of the season.

Lake County continued its rally with a run in the top of the ninth inning before Henry Henry shook off the run and recorded his team-leading fifth save of the season.

Justin Lopes and Luis Roman joined Burgos in hitting a double, while Juwuan Harris also knocked in a run.

TinCap starting pitcher Joey Cantillo followed up his hot month of May with another stellar outing. He scattered three hits over six innings, gave up one earned run, struck out seven and walked one.

In his five May starts, the 19-year-old Hawaiian had an 0.68 ERA.

Three named All-Stars

Three TinCaps were named to the Midwest League All-Star Game, the league announced Wednesday.

Infielder Xavier Edwards, starting pitcher Ryan Weathers and reliever Henry Henry were all selected to the Eastern Division team for the game that will take place June 18 at Four Winds Field in South Bend. All-Stars are nominated and selected by the league’s managers.

“We are really proud of and happy for these guys,” TinCap manager Anthony Contreras said in a release. “This is a credit to the hard work they put in during the off-season and spring training to set themselves up for the success they’ve had so far this year.”

Edwards will start at second base. Entering Wednesday’s game, his .354 batting average in 50 games leads the Midwest League, and his on-base percentage of .411 is second. The 38th overall pick in last year’s draft is listed as the 11th-best prospect for the San Diego Padres.

Weathers, the seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft and the Padres’ No. 8 prospect, is 2-1 on the season in eight starts and has a 3.00 ERA and a WHIP of 1.06. He has 38 strikeouts compared to just five walks.

Henry, a native of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, has a 2.57 ERA in 35 innings over 16 appearances. His 0.97 WHIP ranks ninth-lowest in the league with 30-plus innings.
