DAYTON, Ohio — The Portland Rockets came up short Saturday with a 11-2 loss to the Ohio Warhawks at Nischwitz Stadium on the campus of Wright State University.
It was the third straight loss to start the season for the Rockets, who travel to Indiana Tech at 7 p.m. Tuesday to take on the Northeast Kekionga before their home-opening doubleheader Saturday against the Mishawaka Brewers.
Portland stayed close to the Warhawks through the first four innings as it trailed 3-2 heading into the fifth inning.
But the offense went stagnant down the stretch, as the Ohio Warhawks retired 14 of the last 15 Portland batters, the final eight on strikes.
Malave Bettinger roped an RBI?single in the third inning. It was the Rockets’ only hit of the game.
Flamespray wins twice
Flamespray Machine Service picked up two wins Saturday in Portland Junior League’s Rookie baseball division.
It beat Williams Auto Parts 16-4 and topped All-Circuit Electrical 12-5.
Roman Clamme had a triple, a double and a single for Flamespray in the win against Williams. Easton Johnson contributed a triple and two singles, while Mitchell Byrum had three singles.
Benton Langenkamp and Ethan Peterson had two singles each in the Flamespray victory over All-Circuit.
Bryar Garringer led All-Circuit with two doubles, and Logan Wendel hit a double and a single.
Easton?Sprunger, Jace Vance and Elijah Snyder each had two hits for Williams.
Berne gets win
First Bank of Berne got a 16-7 win over Jay County Therapeutics on Saturday in PJL’s Minor softball division.
Carley Trinidad tripled and singled for Berne, which got a double and two singles from Emily Young. Raylin Hummer and Olivia Gillum each singled.
Opal Garrett hit two singles for Jay County Therapeutic, and Jasmine Esparza chipped in a single in the loss.
Hits aplenty
Hits were not hard to come by as Pak-A-Sak beat Pioneer Packaging 20-6 Saturday in Rookie?baseball action of PJL.
Pak-A-Sak racked up 25 hits, while Pioneer had 12.
Eli Homan, Koltyn Garringer and Tyce Foreman had four hits each for Pak-A-Sak. while Cooper and Cash Reynolds both hit inside-the-park home runs.
Bentley Comer recorded three hits for Pioneer, as Beck Hough, Alex Huntsman,?Blake Jellison and Abram Lee all had two hits.
Bentz paces Loy’s
Tarron Bentz had a four-hit day in leading Loy’s Realty to a 14-6 triumph over Local 1620 on Saturday in PJL’s Sandy Koufax action.
Bentz tripled, singled three times and knocked in two runs, while Bryce Wenk and Gavin McCrosson both doubled and singled twice. Cam Hoover drove in four runs on a triple and a double.
Conner Specht hit a home run in the loss for Local 1620. Isaac Miller and Landon Blowers both contributed a single.
