Arthur Evans

March 4, 1931-Dec. 21, 2018

Arthur R. Evans was called to his maker six months ago on Dec. 21, 2018, in Pharr, Texas. The family will have a Memorial Mass and a luncheon to recognize his life.

Art was raised and spent his whole life in the Portland, Indiana. The Evans family settled in the Jay County area in the mid 1800s. Art married Lena Cahue and was married for 49 years until her death 15 years ago.

He worked most of his life as a union member of the operating engineers, Local 103. He had a short stint as the superintendent of the Jay County Highway Department. Art was also well known in the community for his skills as a “recycling engineer” well into his 80s. Art was a very avid hunter and trapper, which he enjoyed into his later years.

Art was very proud of his family — all five children graduated from college and in his terms have “done well.”

Art is leaving behind four sons and a daughter, Bruce and Loretto Armstrong of Carmel, Indiana, David and Marie of Pharr, Texas, Chris and Bill Abernathy of Eden Prarie, Minnesota, Tony and Mary Lee of Indianapolis and Eric and Kim of Fort Wayne; as well as 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The family would like to invite family and friends to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at 11 a.m. for a Mass of Remembrance with a luncheon/social time to follow.

Baird-Freeman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
