Everyone should support The CR
To the editor:
If my Portland High School (class of 1966) education serves me correctly, $32 per quarter times four quarters equals $128 per year, divided by 312 publications equals 41 cents per copy.
That is what a person living inside Portland pays for the daily Commercial Review.
That is merely one half the cost of a Polar Pop, I believe.
I’m not at all sure what a person who lives in the country pays but I do know I try and tip my carrier, who is there rains, sleet, ice and snow, well every Christmas season.
With that said, I can read the obituaries (anymore making sure I’m not in it); read, in detail, the agenda and discussions for every city council, county council, county commissioners and park board meeting; look forward to reading “Today in History”; read Dear Abby and the comics section; read the want ads; read the editorials; read the court news and deed transfers; and, lastly, keep up with all of the local sports and in the winter what our Jay County High School grads are doing at the college level.
I’ve had employers in the past ask me how I know not to extend credit to someone.
My response?
Read the court news in The CR.
When I lived in Los Angeles, I read the L.A. Times, USA Today and the Chicago Tribune. I now also read the Star Press (Muncie).
I know, I know. I can hear what you are thinking. That dumb old lady probably also watches the news.
You bet — 21 Alive and NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and the weekend anchors.
I also DVR The Today Show every morning to catch up on what happened overnight.
When I inform locals of a death or a wreck, many are dumbstruck. Too many think, “if it ain’t on Facebook, it ain’t important.”
When I think of all of the accolades our small-town, daily newspaper has received over these many, many years, I am astounded and proud. Everyone should support this local endeavor.
