Good weekends come in all forms

As I See It

By Diana Dolecki-

What makes a good weekend? Is it the weather? Is it getting to the bottom of your to-do list? Is it curling up with a good book, a cup of tea and a pet in your lap?

The definition of a good weekend varies with the person. We had a good weekend. My brothers, their wives and us got together for a satisfying meal at a restaurant we like. We were celebrating the February and March birthdays. Yes, I know that it is late for the ones born in February. It seems that we don’t get together nearly as often since Mom died. The other difference is that there was no cake or cookies and we didn’t miss them.

After a lull in the conversation we agreed to meet at the local arboretum. We drove up to where we thought the entrance was and were surprised to find locked gates. A quick phone call to a brother and we were told to go the long way around to the only gate that was open.

We were the last to arrive at the trailhead. The sky was overcast but not threatening. We set out all together. Michael’s wife, Diana, was the first to break away and soon outpaced the rest of us. David’s wife, Apryl, settled in beside me and the conversation turned to genealogy. She had been looking into hers and found a few surprises. I shared my own surprises in my genealogy. It wasn’t long before we had lost Diana and the guys.

The trail was more like a wide gravel road than a trail. I was thankful for this even though there were several muddy places along the way. It was peaceful and a good way to spend an afternoon. We were on the way back to the cars when we began to feel random raindrops. After awhile we caught up with Diana who had arrived at the trail’s end several minutes earlier. The guys eventually came into sight. The raindrops grew more frequent. By the time we had said our goodbyes the raindrops had gotten together and were coming down hard enough to turn the wipers on the car to intermittent.

On the way home my hubby remarked that it had been a good weekend. I agreed. It was time spent with loved ones that made an ordinary rainy day so satisfying. We had eaten a big enough lunch to skip supper and had taken a long enough walk to work off at least some of the extra calories, or that is what we told ourselves.

We are home now and the peaceful feeling persists. The present I ordered for the birthday boy has been entrusted to the post office. The present I ordered for grandson, Jacob, is still lost in space. With any luck both packages should arrive soon.

Speaking of Jacob, he got his mother’s phone for his birthday. When I asked his mom if he had gotten the shirt I ordered the answer was yes. I asked if it fit. Again the same message popped up. This was yesterday. This morning I got a message from my daughter saying she didn’t send the messages. It seems that she left her Facebook Messenger on her old phone and I had been talking to Jacob and not her. He said he wondered why I was talking in the third person. The snafu has been resolved and I have been promised that I will be talking to the intended person from now on.

We spent time with family and time with nature. The rain didn’t begin in earnest until we were back in the shelter of our cars. It was a good weekend. I hope your weekend was as satisfying as ours was.
