East Elementary says thank you
To the editor:
All of us at East Elementary would like to thank every person who made Grandparents' Day events so special for the students.
It was our pleasure to welcome 580 grandparents into the school where they got to spend time with their grandchildren. Additionally, many grandparents "adopted" students whose grandparents were not able to attend. Thank you so much for your acts of kindness. I know they will have a ripple effect in the lives of children.
Asbury United Methodist Church even sent "loaner grandparents" for those who needed one for the day, and they treated them just as they would their own.
Thank you, too, to the Portland Police Department for being at the school to help us direct traffic and interact with the students.
We had a book fair in conjunction with Grandparents' Day, and again, we are overwhelmed by your generosity. The book fair sold over $5,000 in books.
The profits from that went to provide $1,000 in books for teachers' classrooms and another $1,600 that will go to the student activities account. This account helps pay for educational experiences like the Stevens Puppet show that was enjoyed by students the Friday before school break.
Again, it was our pleasure to welcome you to our school and the staff here appreciates each and every one of you and the love you have for children.
With gratitude,
Janice McGalliard
Interim principal at East Elementary
