VAN WERT, Ohio — The Indians got great hitting and solid pitching in a win on Monday.
They weren't quite able to replicate it on Tuesday.
Fort Recovery High School's baseball team struggled at the plate and gave up too many free bases in a 7-0 loss to the host Lincolnview Lancers on Tuesday.
“It didn't go the way we wanted it to go,” said FRHS coach Jerry Kaup, whose team sits at 1-1 in the early goings of the season. “We wanted to stay close because we knew they had good pitching.
“And we didn't.”
Riley Post drew a one-out walk in the top of the first inning but got picked off by lefty pitcher Landon Price. Garrett Faller followed with a two-out single but he was left stranded.
Ian Homan led off the second with a seeing-eye single to right field, but he too fell victim to Price's pickoff move and got tagged out close to second base.
Ryne Post, who got hit by a pitch with two outs in the third inning, was also fooled by Price's move to first and was caught in a rundown, but an off-target throw fromfirst baseman Ethan Kemler allowed Post to slide safely into second.
Post, along with Kody Shinabery in the top of the seventh, were the only Tribe players to reach second base. Neither reached third.
“Their guys were a little bit better pitching tonight,” Kaup said. Two of Fort Recovery's three hits were with two outs, and two others reached base with two gone in an inning. The Indians also struck out 10 times.
“We didn't have an opportunity to drive in (runs),” Kaup said. “There was nobody on base when we got something started.”
Price scattered three hits over five scoreless innings, struck out eight and walked one. Thad Walker preserved the shutout, throwing two frames of relief with two strikeouts and a walk.
Homan, who had two of the Tribe's three hits, had the only solid contact off Price on his single up the middle in the fourth inning.
Lincolnview (1-0) scored the only necessary run in the bottom of the first inning. Gavin Carter reached on a walk before he advanced on a wild pitch. Creed Jessee bounced out to shortstop to move Carter to third, and Kemler drove him in with a single to left field.
Two hits and a pair of errors helped the Lancers plate three runs in the second to make it 4-0, and two innings later Jessee blasted a double to right center field off Tribe starter Joe Homan to bring around Sam Myers and Collin Overholt. Jessee moved to third on a wildpitch, and trotted home as Kemler grounded out to shortstop.
Homan surrendered seven runs — four earned — on five hits, struck out two and walked five on 98 pitches in 3 2/3 innings. Damage already done, Cole Grisez came in to relieve him. Grisez struck out three and walked two.
“I thought Joe gave us an opportunity to win,” Kaup said. “He threw 90-some pitches. If he can not walk quite as many guys and we can give him a little better defensive support, he's got the possibility of getting those full games in.
“He ran out of gas and you could see when his tank turned empty. He changed.”
