PONETO — Isaac Moeller was far from perfect.

He walked three batters and hit three more.

But he never allowed a hit and carved up the Raiders in the process.

Moeller, a Jay County High School senior, turned in the best outing of his career on Tuesday, throwing a no-hitter in leading the Patriot baseball team to a 9-0 win over Southern Wells.

It was the Allen County Athletic Conference opener for the Patriots (11-2, 1-0 ACAC), who host Adams Central tonight.

Moeller blew through the Southern Wells lineup for 14 strikeouts, a new career high, in the complete-game shutout.

Offensively, Wyatt Geesman blasted a pair of home runs,  the first multi-homer game of his career. He went yard in the third and sixth innings. Noah Arbuckle, Michael Schlechty, Quinn Faulkner, Daniel Fugiett and Moeller all had two hits for Jay County.



Patriots rout

PONETO — A hot start offensively and a hit parade carried the Jay County softball team to a 14-2 victory against the host Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday.

The Patriots (6-6, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) scored four times in the first inning and added five in the fourth for a commanding 9-0 advantage. Southern Wells finally hit the scoreboard with two runs in the home half of the fifth, but Jay County pushed the score to 10-2 in the sixth and put the game well out of reach with four more runs in the seventh inning.

Kailee Denney, who struck out six in the complete-game win, did damage at the plate as well with two hits, including a double, and four RBIs. 

Kensey Litton, Randi Ferguson, Aubrie Schwieterman, Hannah Phillips and Sam Twigg all finished with two hits.



Jay falls to Raiders

Jay County’s boys golf team lost to the Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday at Portland Golf Club.

The Raiders totaled 195, while the Patriots (1-6, 1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) finished with 218.

Griffin Mann paced Jay County with 49. He shot even on the par-4 first and par-3 eighth holes. His Southern Wells playing partner, Hunter Jones, earned match medalist honors by carding 46.

Devin Harris was the No. 2 golfer for the Patriots. He made one par on his way to a 52. Kyle Sanders (54) and Joey Hall (63) completed the team total for JCHS.

Matthew Hall shot 64, but did not factor into the team total.



Tennis gets win

The Jay County girls tennis team entertained sectional rival Randolph Southern on Tuesday and came away with a 3-2 victory.

Maria Dirksen didn’t drop a game in winning her No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0. Teresa Romero earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, while Dawn Minnick fell at No. 1 singles 6-4, 7-5.

At No. 2 doubles, Ella Roessner and Ashlyn May won 6-0, 6-1. Janae Kirby and Kaitlyn Ruiz fell at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-4.



Jay JV wins

Five errors helped the Jay County junior varsity baseball team to a 12-1 win over Southern Wells on Tuesday in five innings.

The Patriots scored 12 straight runs, including seven in the first inning. They added one in each of the second and third frames before tacking on three more in the fourth. The Raiders got their only run in the fifth.

Dyllan Garringer, Caleb Hale, Gavin Myers, Kess McBride, Adrek Pogue, Sam Dunlavy, Darius Esparza and Crosby Heniser all recorded hits for the Patriots. Dunlavy earned the win pitching, He struck out eight and walked one.



Chiefs top Eagles

The East Jay Middle School boys and girls track teams both defeated West Jay on Tuesday at Jay County High School.

The EJMS boys won all but three events in a 77-23 victory, and the Chief girls got a 59-41 win.

Thomas Lemaster and Joseph Kunk had two individual wins for the EJMS boys. LeMaster won the 1,600- and 800-meter runs, while Kunk got first in the shot put and discus. Grayson Williams (hurdles), William Ramseyer (100 dash), Owen Ransom (200 dash) and Isaac Kunkler (high jump) all won their respective events.

Skyler Bee of West Jay won the 400 dash and long jump events.

Lydia Keihn got two wins for the EJMS girls, taking the top spot in the 1,600 run and 800 run. Natalie Wehrly (100 dash) and Bralee VanSkyock (200 dash) won as well.

West Jay’s Gabi Bilbrey won shot put, discus and long jump. Emma Outcalt took first in the 400 dash and Grace Shimp got a high jump victory.
