BERNE — The Starfires cruised in the conference game.
They had to rally in game two.
South Adams High School’s softball team swept a doubleheader with the Woodlan Warriors on Tuesday.
The Starfires (15-2, 3-0 Allen County Athletic Conference), who are tied for seventh in the Class 2A poll, took the first game, an ACAC tilt, 5-0. They erased a 9-1 deficit after the fourth inning for a 10-9 win in game two.
Anna Nussbaum gave up five hits and struck out 14 Warriors in game one.
Offensively, Mallory Hirschy finished the day with a double and three singles, and Jenna Myers doubled, singled twice and drove in a team-high four RBIs. Emilie Hammell tallied three hits and two RBIs, as Kristen Wynn and Taylor Augsburger had two hits each. Wynn drove in three runs and Augsburger knocked in two.
Savannah Alberson had an RBI double in game two, and Kayla LeFever chipped in a double as well. Augsburger scored three runs.
Stars fall to Jets
BERNE — The South Adams girls tennis team fell to county rival Adams Central on Tuesday, 5-0.
The win drops the Starfires to 4-3 on the year and 2-1 in Allen County Athletic Conference play.
Alexa Kinsey battled in her No. 3 singles match. She lost the first set to Rendi Degitz 6-2 but won the second 6-4. Degitz nabbed the third 6-2 for the match win.
At No. 1 doubles, Hannah Dull fell to Maddy DeRoo 6-1, 6-3, and Josie Grabau fell at No. 2 singles to Saige Rinkenberger 6-2, 6-1.
Michelle Donis and Gabi Bailey won the first set of their No. 1 doubles match against Abby Miller and Ava Kintz 6-1, but lost the next two 6-2, 6-0.
Anna Dee and Claire Burson lost to Lexi Hurst and Becca Fiecter at No. 2 doubles 6-2, 6-4.
Early hole sinks FR
WAPAKONETA, Ohio — A five-run first inning sank the Fort Recovery baseball team in a 6-0 loss to the Wapakoneta Redskins on Tuesday.
After a comfortable lead in the bottom of the first, the Redskins pushed across an insurance run in the second inning and held on down the stretch.
Fort Recovery (11-9) only managed one hit, a Ryne Post double. Kody Shinabery, Cobe Wendel and Regan Martin all drew walks. The Indians struggled otherwise, striking out a total of eight times.
Cole Grisez was handed the loss. He allowed five runs — three earned — on two hits and walked two while failing to get out of the first inning.
Optimist edges Lions
Portland Optimist edged Lions Club 4-2 on Tuesday in Portland Junior League’s Willie Mays division.
Hayden Ison doubled, singled and knocked in two runs for Optimist. Max Klopfenstein singled, walked, had an RBI and scored a run. Shawn Harrell walked three times, while Jayden Harrell drew two free passes. Xavien Maxwell notched an RBI, while Dougie Cox and Carson Busick also scored a run.
Stats for Lions Club were not provided.
REMC wins
Jay County REMC knocked off Display Craft 11-2 on Tuesday in PJL softball action.
Ashlynn Brunswick, Charlee Peters, Karsyn Schwieterman and Haley Comer each had three hits for REMC. Kenady Lyons contributed two hits.
Brunswick tallied three runs, as Peters, Schwieterman and Lyons each had two.
Jaylee Twigg and Emery Forthover both collected two hits and a run for Display Craft. Chaley Butler, Kenzlea Bentz and Lillian Stephen all chipped in a hit.
PG-14, Inman tie
No winner was determined on Tuesday between PG-14 and Inman U-Loc in the Willie Mays division of PJL.
They played to a 2-2 tie.
Maddox Huffman and Nick Snow both doubled for PG-14, which also got a single from Leighton Brown.
Gavin Byrum and Trevor Jones hit singles for Inman.
