The Patriots had a tough time against the Jets.

Jay County High School’s softball team struggled mightily Wednesday as it was no-hit in a 10-0 loss to the Adams Central Jets in five innings.

Adams Central (7-2, 2-1 Allen County Athletic Conference) plated a run in the top of the first inning and tacked on three more in the second for a 4-0 lead. A six-run fourth frame broke the game open for the visiting Jets.

The Patriots (6-7, 1-2 ACAC) struck out 13 times, and defensively committed four errors.

Jay County returns to action tonight, continuing ACAC play against the Heritage Patriots. First pitch set for 6 p.m.



Tennis swept

Jay County’s tennis team fell to Adams Central on Wednesday, 5-0.

Maria Dirksen and Lyric Garringer lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. At No. 3 singles, Grace Brewster fell 6-0, 6-3.

Holly Hemmelgarn and Lilly Hedges came up short in their No. 1 doubles match with a 6-0, 6-3 setback. The Patriots’ No. 2 doubles team of Sofia Barcus and Ashlyn May fell 6-3, 6-2.

Jay County’s junior varsity team lost, 2-1. Teresa Romero and Paula Haid got a doubles victory, 6-4.



Jets top Jay

MONROE — The Jay County junior varsity baseball team got no-hit Wednesday in a 12-0, five-inning loss to Adams Central.

The Jets sandwiched three runs in the first and third innings around a five-run second inning. Adams Central pushed the margin to a dozen with another run in the home half of the fourth.

Jay County (4-6-1) recorded only one walk thanks to Drew Powers. The JCHS defense committed five errors in the setback.

Powers was charged with the loss. He gave up eight runs — none earned — on two hits in two innings. He also walked six.



JV softball gets win

MONROE — Jay County’s junior varsity softball team moved to 2-2 on the year Wednesday with a 4-1 win against the host Adams Central Jets.

Two runs in the second inning gave the Patriots a lead it never gave up. The Jets cut the deficit in half in the third frame, but a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings extended the JCHS advantage.

Lexie Ferguson surrendered only two hits, while giving up one earned run. She struck out six and didn’t issue a walk. At the plate, Ferguson contributed a hit and an RBI.

Makaya Champ collected two hits and an RBI. Maddie Rinker doubled, and Emma Swingley, Rieley Brewster, Kristen Wendel and Breanna Randall all singled. 



Flamespray wins

A total of 25 hits carried Flamespray Machine Service to a 14-7 win against Barnett’s Auto Parts on Wednesday in Portland Junior League’s Rookie baseball.

Bryce VanSkyock and Eli Westgerdes were both 3-for-3 in the Flamespray win. Bentley Brunswick contributed two hits, while Gabe Bentz and Ethan Peterson both collected singles.

John Osborne doubled and singled for Barnett’s. Varen Ridgway, Josh Brown and Finn Hemmelgarn had two hits apiece. Brayden Keihn also had a hit.
