FORT RECOVERY — The rally was in full swing.
A perfect throw ended it.
Fort Recovery High School's softball team had its rally fall short in a season-ending, 8-6 loss to the Marion Local Flyers on Thursday in the Division IV sectional final.
“I've been telling them all year they can't wait until the end of the ball game to decide they want to play ball,” FRHS coach EJ Stephen said. “Showed tonight they can (come back). They've had some pretty good comebacks this year, but tonight they just couldn't piece it all together to get that one final comeback.”
Marion Local (8-12), which lost to Fort Recovery 10-1 in their Midwest Athletic Conference tilt April 23, advances to the Wapakoneta district seminal against New Bremen.
With Fort Recovery trailing 8-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Brenna Homan got hit by a pitch with one out and subsequently stole second base to get in scoring position. Following a strikeout, Jackie Homan also got hit by a pitch from Marion Local starter Ashlyn Bohman. Lydia Wenning followed with an RBI single to left field to score Brenna Homan, and Rachel Thien singled to left field as well to cut the margin to 8-6.
But as Marion Local left fielder Hailey Wilker threw the ball in to shortstop Rachel Partington, Thien was a step too far off of first base as she rounded toward second. Partington threw a seed across the diamond to Emily Nietfeld, who applied a tag to Thien for the final out of the game.
“Rachel has been playing great defense the last couple games,” Marion Local coach Jerry Moeller said. “She's turned it up. That throw from shortstop to first base, right on. She didn't even hesitate.”
Fort Recovery (13-10), which ended the year with the most wins in a season since it won a dozen in 2010, had already rallied once in the game, but was unable to complete a second comeback.
Marion Local scored three times in the first inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Bohman and Olivia DeMange. The Indians responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame and took a 4-3 advantage on a Jackie Homan two-run home run that hit the top of the fence and bounced over during the third inning.
“Sparked them a little bit but just not enough,” Stephen said.
The Flyers answered by scoring three times, including a Sam Pierron two-run single, in the top of the fourth. They extended the margin to 8-4 with a pair of runs one inning later.
“We told the girls to stay aggressive,” Moeller said. The Flyers struck out 10 times in the first meeting. “We changed quite a bit since we played them and we've been hitting the ball pretty good the last couple games.”
Jackie Homan also singled to share the team-high of two hits with Thien. Hannah Knapke and Aleigha Jenkins — they played their final games for Fort Recovery — had hits as well
“We've had a good season this year and the girls have to keep their heads high for next year,” Stephen said. “We only lose two seniors, two very good seniors, but we only lose two so it's a chance to keep building and come out really good next year.”
Brooke Hartings, Partington, Bohman and DeMange each had two hits for the Flyers.
