MARION — It took three extra innings for the Starfires to take game one.
They had to hold on for two frames for the sweep.
Emilie Hammell hit the eventual game-winning single in the top of the ninth inning of game one and the South Adams High School softball team scored four times in the sixth inning of game two and held on to complete the sweep of the host Eastbrook Panthers on Saturday.
The Starfires, who are tied for seventh in Class 2A, moved to 18-2 on the season after its seventh consecutive win. Their last loss was an April 26 setback to Bellmont, 3-0.
Taylor Augsburger led South Adams with five hits, including a pair of doubles and a 4-for-4 effort in game one. She also had one RBI and scored once. Jenna Myers collected four hits and scored three times, while Mallory Hirschy and Hammell had three hits each. Kayla LeFever and Hammell both drove in a pair of runs.
Anna Nussbaum scattered six hits over nine innings in game one. She struck out 10, walked six and allowed two earned runs. Jade Baker got the win pitching game two.
SA blanks Spartans
FORT WAYNE — The South Adams baseball team blanked the Homestead Spartans on Saturday, 4-0.
The Class 2A No. 6 Starfires (14-4) scored three times in the top of the third inning for the only runs necessary to get the victory. They tacked on an insurance run in the fifth inning all the while keeping the Spartans (16-5), who received votes in the Class 4A poll, off the scoreboard.
Collin Shaffer hit a three-run double in the fourth inning to pace the SAHS offense. Nic Stuber had two hits, while AJ Dull and Alex Gorney singled as well.
Shaffer also shined on the bump, scattering two hits over seven innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
SA falls to Vikings
HUNTINGTON NORTH — Alexa Kinsey earned the only victory for the South Adams girls tennis team Friday as it fell to the Huntington North Vikings, 4-1.
Kinsey dropped the first set of her No. 2 singles match to Emily Bokel, 6-4, but rebounded to win set two by the same score before winning the match with a 6-3 victory in the third set.
Hannah Dull fell at No. 1 singles to Jesica Henline 6-0, 6-1, and at No. 3 singles Anna Dee lost to Emily Daas 6-1, 6-4.
The Starfires’ No. 1 doubles team of Josie Grabau and Gabi Bilbrey fell to Mary Wohlford and Maisy Kesler 6-2, 6-3. Ashleyn Claghorn and Mileena Mowery lost their No. 2 doubles match to Crosley Stanley and Sydney Smekens 6-0, 6-0.
