PARKER CITY — Collin Shaffer homered in the top of the first inning.
He went deep again to lead off the fourth, and the Starfires cruised from there despite allowing a late push.
Shaffer had the first multi-homer game of his career and knocked in three runs on Monday for the South Adams High School baseball team in its 11-7 win against the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.
After back-to-back singles from Grant Besser and Nic Stuber to start the first inning — Besser scored on a wild pitch — Shaffer’s two-run homer helped the Starfires (15-4), who are ranked sixth in Class 2A, grab a 3-0 lead over the fourth-ranked Golden Bears.
Monroe Central (17-4) trimmed the margin to one after its first trip to bat, but South Adams scored eight runs over the next three frames, including Shaffer’s solo homer as part of a three-run fourth frame, for an 11-2 lead.
The Golden Bears fought back with a five-spot in the sixth inning but couldn’t get any closer.
Tim Davidson and Stuber, who finished with a pair of RBIs, knocked doubles in the win, and Aaron Timmons had a pair of singles. Conner Young got the win, allowing two earned runs on a pair of hits over four innings. He struck out four and walked five.
