The Starfires tied the game two frames later, and jumped out front in the sixth.
Despite an attempt at a rally, the Starfires hung on.
The South Adams High School softball team stayed perfect in Allen County Athletic Conference play with a 9-7 victory against the Jay County Patriots on Tuesday.
The Class 2A No. 7 Starfires moved to 19-2 (5-0 ACAC), while Jay County dipped to 9-9 (1-4 ACAC).
Kristen Wynn tripled and singled twice for South Adams, and Kayla LeFever registered four singles. Emilie Hammell collected three singles and three RBIs, Taylor Augsburger singled twice as did Anna Nussbaum. Aaliyah Feaster doubled for the Starfires.
Shelby Caldwell led Jay County with three singles and three RBIs. Kensey Litton homered, doubled and finished with two RBIs. Kailee Denney contributed two singles and an RBI.
Nussbaum allowed seven runs — five earned — on 13 hits and struck out nine over seven innings.
Denney surrendered nine runs, eight of which were earned, on 17 hits.
Jay falls to Delta
ALBANY — Jay County’s boys golf team dropped a match to the Delta Eagles on Tuesday at Albany Golf Club, 170-233.
Kyle Sanders posted the best score for Jay County, a 52. Devin Harris was second with 57, and Seth Wilson was two strokes behind him. Joey Hall completed the team score with his round of 65.
Isaac Braun and Matthew Hall both shot 67, but they did not factor into the team score.
Mason Hunt of Delta was the match medalist with a 5-over-par 40.

FARMLAND — The Jay County middle school boys golf team grabbed a 142-181 win over Monroe Central on Tuesday in a 6-hole match at Hickory Hills Golf Club.
Caleb DeRome shot 5-over-par 28 to lead Jay County. Brock DeHoff was second on the team with 36. Patrick Hemmelgarn finished third on the squad with 38, and Bretton Basford was one stroke behind him.
Hunter Runyon and Tyler Manor had matching scores of 41, but they did not contribute to the team total.
