SELMA — The Starfires’ streak came to an end.
South Adams High School’s softball team had its eight-game winning streak halted on Wednesday with a 4-3 loss to the host Wapahani Raiders.
The Class 2A No. 4 Starfires (19-3) scored once in the top of the first inning but the Raiders responded with a three-run frame in their first trip to the plate.
South Adams trimmed the deficit in the second inning only to have Wapahani re-take a two-run lead in the third. The Starfires again rallied by scoring once in the fourth but they were not able to jump ahead again.
Kayla LeFever doubled for one of the Starfires’ seven hits. Jenna Myers, Taylor Augsburger, Kristen Wynn, Megan Miller, Aaliyah Feaster and Madi Smith all singled. Jade Baker and Smith both notched RBIs.
Baker took the loss pitching, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in six innings. She struck out one and walked one.
SA tennis advances
OSSIAN — The South Adams girls tennis team advanced to the sectional semifinal with a 4-1 victory over the Bluffton Tigers on Wednesday at Norwell.
The Starfires (6-6) meet defending champion Huntington North at 4:30 p.m. today. The host Knights, who beat Bellmont 4-1, square off against Adams Central in the other semifinal.
Josie Grabau had to battle to win her No. 2 singles match. She dropped the first set 7-6 (9-7), but rebounded to win set two 6-3 to force a third. The sophomore won the match with a 6-4 triumph in the decisive set.
At No. 3 singles, Alexa Kinsey won 6-2, 6-1.
Kirsten Herman and Gabi Bailey teamed for a No. 1 doubles win, 6-1, 7-5, while Michelle Donis and Anna Dee got a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.
Hannah Dull dropped her No. 1 singles contest, 6-2, 6-3.
Stars split
BERNE — South Adams’ junior varsity softball team split a doubleheader with the Norwell Knights on Wednesday.
Norwell grabbed the first game 17-6 in six innings, and the Starfires (9-8) won the second game 13-3 in five frames.
Carlie Sealscott totaled three doubles, a single and three RBIs for the Starfires, who also got a double, two singles and four RBIs from Savannah Alberson. Macy Hirschy tripled and singled, while Lilly Patterson collected two doubles, three hits and scored five runs along with Sealscott.
Poppi Lenwell pitched the Starfires to the win in the second game. She allowed three runs — none earned — on one hit. She struck out one and walked five.
Berne thumps Crossroads
In a battle of financial institutions, First Bank of Berne thumped Crossroads Financial Federal Credit Union 13-4 on Wednesday in Portland Junior League’s Minor softball division.
Natalie May, Carley Trinidad, Emily Young, Alexis Sibray and Rose Canter all singled in the win for Berne.
Hallie Schwieterman tripled and drove in three runs for Crossroads, and Brooklyn Bright doubled. Sadie Garringer, Jordan Hutzler and Emma Ransom all singled.
Pioneer comes out on top
Pioneer Packaging earned a 6-5 victory against Pak-A-Sak on Rookie baseball action of PJL on Wednesday.
Rayden Sollars had an inside-the-park home run, two singles and two RBIs for Pioneer. Irik Donalthan doubled, singled and knocked in a pair of runs, while Alex Huntsman doubled and singled twice. Blake Jellison had two singles.
Cooper Reynolds and Tyce Foreman each had inside-the-park homers for Pak-A-Sak. Cruz Darby singled twice. Eli Homan and Cash Reynolds both contributed singles.
