SPENCERVILLE, Ohio — Before the meet, Kylee Moody had an inclination.
The Tribe had a shot.
She had tallied up the score based on seeds, and her boys were in the running.
Could they pull it off?
Jared Timmerman gave the Indians their first win Thursday.
Four more victories and three additional top-four finishes Saturday clinched it.
District champions.
Only needing to beat its conference rival in the 4x400-meter relay, the Fort Recovery High School’s boys track team had a victory by nearly two seconds to claim the Division III district championship Saturday at Spencerville.
“We knew it was possible,” Moody, Fort Recovery’s track coach said. The Indians scored 90 points to win the program’s first district trophy. “The gentlemen knew what needed to be done, what we needed to score, who we needed to be looking at (and) what events were dangerous for us.
“They came through (with) good positions in qualifying on Thursday and then they just came through (Saturday). They are pretty confident. They have a lot of desire.”
Marion Local was the runner-up with 85.5 points, and Lincolnview scored 84 points for third out of 18 scoring teams.
Minster’s girls, the defending state champions, scored 104 points to win their championship. Kalida totaled 81 points for second. Fort Recovery, which had one individual champion in Whitley Rammel and sent athletes to the Troy regional in eight events, scored 68 points for fifth out of 17 teams.
The top four in each event advance to regional. Preliminaries are Thursday and the finals are Saturday.
Moody wasn’t the only one who knew the FRHS boys had a chance at claiming the title. Drew Muhlenkamp, who won the 400 dash in 49.97 seconds and anchored the 4x400 relay team of Owen Moorman, Jacob Acheson and Timmerman that won in 3 minutes, 29.84 seconds, also believed his team could do it.
“It took a lot of hard work, a lot of determination to get to this point,” he said. “But from the beginning of the season we knew we could do this and this was just a pat on the back for what’s to come.”
Robby LeFevre and Riley Pearson were a solid one-two punch for Fort Recovery in the 110 hurdles. LeFevre won the race in 15.9 seconds, and Pearson was the runner-up a tenth of a second behind him for a big 18 team points.
Pearson and LeFevre also bookended the 4x100 relay team, with Brayden Schoen and Jared Timmerman in the middle, that won by more than a second in 44.24.
LeFevre was also runner-up in the 100 dash and 200 dash events. LeFevre’s time of 11.27 seconds in the former was second to Kalida’s Jared Verhoff, whose winning time of 10.88 was a new district meet record.
Verhoff also won the 200 dash in 22.28 seconds, and LeFevre had a time of 22.72.
Fort Recovery’s final regional qualifier came in the 4x200 relay, as Pearson, Schoen, Moorman and Acheson were fourth in 1:32.72.
A week after winning the program’s first Midwest Athletic Conference championship, the Indian boys are district champs. The Tribe has a lot of momentum heading into regional, and Muhlenkamp is confident they’ll be able to keep it going.
“At this point we can’t get any faster in the season,” he said. ‘It’s just a lot of mental toughness. Being ready to race is what we need to strive for this coming week.”
Rammel, a freshman, was second in shot put out of the preliminary round. On her last attempt of the final she set a new career best with a throw of 36 feet, 7.5 inches, to overtake Erin Scott of New Knoxville by 1.5 inches to win the district title.
“It’s definitely rewarding especially with coach (Holly) Gann working this year with the throws,” Moody said. Gann was a three-time state qualifier for the Indians and placed seventh in the state finals in the discus as a senior.
Cassy Martin and Kierra Wendel were both second in the 400 dash and 800 run respectively to make regional. They joined Ava Bubp and Chloe Will to take second in the 4x800 relay, teamed with Abbie Francis and Will for a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay and were fourth in the 4x200 relay with Audrey Guggenbiller and Francis.
Will placed third in both the 1,600 run and 3,200 run.
