YORKTOWN — A grand slam put the Patriots in an early hole.

The offense was just a tad too late.

Parker Stinson hit a grand slam as part of a six-run first inning for the Yorktown Tigers and the Jay County High School baseball team had its offense show up a little late in an 8-4 loss Monday.

The Patriots dip to 16-5 ahead of their 5:30 p.m. matchup tonight with the Delta Eagles at Don E. Selvey Field.

A leadoff walk, a single and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Stinson, who sent Brayden Mock’s eighth pitch of the at bat over the right field fence for a 4-0 Tiger lead. Yorktown later put up two more runs in the frame before adding a pair in the third for an 8-0 advantage.

Noah Arbuckle hit a two-run home run of his own in the top of the fourth inning, and Jay County pushed across two more an inning later but didn’t manage much else offensively.

Cameron Henry was 2-for-3, as Ryan Schlechty, Wyatt Geesaman, Michael Schlechty, Daniel Fugiett and Quinn Faulkner each contributed hits.

Fort drops tune-up

NEW BREMEN, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s baseball team lost a tournament tune-up to the New Bremen Cardinals on Monday, 7-3.

The game was added to the schedule as a tune-up to the team’s upcoming district tournament games.

Fort Recovery (12-12) scored a run in each of the first two innings, but the Cardinals (19-5) answered both times with two runs for a 4-2 lead after the second inning. The Tribe cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the third, and the Cardinals tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth inning for the win.

Ryne Post had the only two hits for the Indians. Garrett Faller and Post both had RBIs. Owen Schoen drew a pair of walks.

Fort Recovery continues its postseason at 2 p.m. Thursday against top-ranked Coldwater in the Division III district semifinal at Elida. New Bremen takes on St. Henry on Wednesday at Coldwater.
