One of the Jay County Robotics junior high teams won the championship tournament at the recent Southwood State Qualifying event and is now qualified for the 2020 State Championship competition to be held March 7 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Team 1193B — George Weesner, Ryne Goldsworthy, Ben Heath and Jacob Kellogg — qualified first with a score of 472, winning both the championship tournament and the robot skills portion of the event.
Team 1193J — Nathan Lothridge, Ty Paxson, Carsen Davis and Matthew Fisher — qualified seventh with a score of 358 and finished third in the championship tournament.
Team 1193C — Austyn LeMaster, Rose Carter, Andrew Stouder and William Hawbaker — qualified 18th with a score of 204.
In the high school competition, team 1193R — Tyler Weesner, Jesse Basham, Corben Lugar and Elijah Stephens — qualified second with a perfect 7-0 through the qualification rounds and ended the day as semi-finalists. They were also third place in the robot skills part of the event.
Team 1193Z — Makayla Templeton, Aiden Garlinger and Isaac Peterson — qualified fifth with a record of 4-2-1 and ended the day as semi-finalists. Team 1193T — Jaiden Watson, Landon Weaver, Ashton Towell, Kenny Carducci and Zane Bradshaw — qualified 11th with a record of 3-4 and made it to the quarter finals.
Fun night set
Jay Community Center’s Family Fun Night is set for Friday, Nov. 15, beginning at 6 p.m.
Mark’s Ark will be on hand with a live animal demonstration. There will also be pizza, balloon animals and face painting.
Those attending are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank.
Family Fun Night is sponsored by the Portland Rotary Club, Portland Optimists, the Portland Lions Club, Delta Theta Tau sorority, Cincinnatus League and CrossRoads Financial Federal Credit Union.
Donated
Four books were recently anonymously donated to the Jay County Public Library in honor of newspaper publisher Jack Ronald. The four were recommended by Ronald in a recent column.
The books are “Say Nothing” by Patrick Radden Keefe, “Brunelleschi’s Dome” by Ross King, “The Map of Knowledge” by Violet Moller and “The Lies that Bind” by Kwame Anthony Appiah.
Meeting scheduled
Jay County Historical Society will hold its annual dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at Asbury United Methodist Church. The cost of the meal is $10, and reservations are required by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The dinner meeting will also include the election of five members of the board of directors. Board members whose terms are expiring are Jeff Bowen, Claudia Jones, Carter Leonard, Jodi McKee and Judy Zearbaugh.
Scholarship
The Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association is partnering with Ivy Tech Community College to offer volunteer first responders a chance to earn a two-year degree, tuition free.
Ivy Tech has committed $250,000 over two years to pay for tuition and fees for volunteer first responders to attend academic programs with the exception of Flight Aviation and General Studies.
