With consolidation, some school names are going to have to change.
Superintendent Jeremy Gulley floated his new name proposals Monday night, suggesting that one of the buildings be named in honor of a Jay County serviceman killed in action in Afghanistan.
With an eye toward board approval in January, Gulley recommended that the General Shanks Elementary building, which is going to be repurposed as central office and home to some select programs, be re-named the Andrew F. Whitacre Administration Center.
Whitacre, a 2005 graduate of JCHS, was killed in action in Afghanistan on June 19, 2008, as a lance corporal with the U.S. Marines.
Gulley also recommended that Jay County High School be re-named Jay County Junior/Senior High School, that the West Jay Middle School building be re-named West Jay Elementary and that the East Jay Middle School building be re-named East Jay Elementary.
“I attended Andrew’s funeral in the JCHS gym in 2008,” said Gulley, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Indiana National Guard who also served in Afghanistan. “I see his family each year at the Senior Honors Night at JCHS. This building name would also represent all previous Jay School Corporation graduates killed while defending the nation.”
Renaming the buildings is “a very practical question that needs to be answered,” Gulley told the Jay School Board. “There are numerous local, state and federal agencies that require data, reports and processes involving the names and grade configurations of the schools. Coordinating with these entities in a timely manner with respect to changes in school names is required.”
One name change, Gulley noted, requires further input from the community.
Confusion is likely to result from having an East Elementary and an East Jay Elementary, he said, so the current East Elementary would have to get a new name.
What that name would be depends upon community input.
Board member Chris Snow said he hoped every effort would be made to continue to honor Pete Brewster, a Portland High School graduate who was a standout football player for Purdue University and the Cleveland Browns, when Pete Brewster Field is converted to a playground at East Jay Elementary School next year.
“We’re trying to address that,” said board president Phil Ford.
Action on any name changes is expected at the board’s Jan. 20 meeting.
