FORT RECOVERY — A fourth-quarter flurry put the Indians on the ropes.
A late score gave them the lead.
An incomplete pass ended the streak.
The Panthers' potential game-tying 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete as the Fort Recovery High School football team held off a Parkway surge in the fourth quarter to snap a four-game losing streak with a 27-26 victory Friday night at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park.
The Indians improved to 2-4 (1-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) after four straight losses while Parkway lost its fourth in a row and dipped to 2-4 (0-4 MAC).
After failing to score through the first three quarters, Parkway erased a 20-0 deficit with three touchdowns less than six minutes into the final period.
Caleb Kinney caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Rich just seven seconds into the fourth quarter. Rich connected with Kinney a mere 30 seconds later to make it 20-14, and then, with 6:39 to play in the game, Nick Hawk had a 2-yard rushing score to tie the game at 20.
Fort Recovery quarterback Clay Schmitz put the Indians back on top with a 1-yard touchdown run with 3:08 to go.
Parkway fired right back, though, needing just 1:50 before Hawk caught an 8-yard TD pass from Gavin Stober with 18 seconds to play.
Rather than kick the extra point to tie the game, the Panthers went for the win. Rich, who was 13-of-21 for 173 yards and two touchdowns with a pair of interceptions, had his 2-point conversion pass to Kinney fall incomplete as Fort Recovery held on for the win.
Kinney caught six passes for 86 yards to lead the Panthers, and Hawk totaled 56 yards on 18 carries.
Schmitz threw for 354 yards on 16-of-23 passing, including an 86-yard TD toss to Derek Jutte for the game's first score and a 25-yard strike to Jacob Acheson in the third quarter.
Gavin Thobe had a touchdown catch of 20 yards in the third period ahead of the comeback by the Panthers, who host New Bremen (4-2, 2-2 MAC) next week.
Jutte finished with 115 yards on just three receptions, and Thobe also eclipsed the century mark in receiving yards with 105 on four catches. Jutte led the Indians, who host the Division VI No. 6 Anna Rockets (5-1, 3-1 MAC) next week, with 88 yards on 14 carries.
Mitchell Pugh, who was crowned homecoming king before the game, led the Fort Recovery defense with 19 tackles, and Thobe was second with 11 stops. Josh Muhlenkamp and Owen Moorman each had a sack.
