The Patriots swept through their first home tournament of the season.
A former conference rival won the second.
The Jay County High School volleyball team was second Saturday at it hosted the Patriot Volleyball Invitational.
The Patriots (15-7) defeated the Eastbrook Panthers 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 before losing to Class 3A No. 3 Leo Lions 25-19, 25-20, 25-13. Leo (22-4) defeated Eastbrook in three sets.
Alana Kunkler led Jay County with 12 total kills, including eight against the Panthers. She also had six blocks, which tied Madison Dirksen for the team lead.
Natalie Miles finished with nine kills, while Hallie Fields and Miles had 14 digs apiece. Pacie Denney totaled 30 assists.
Tribe girls eighth
COLDWATER, Ohio — The Fort Recovery girls cross country team finished eighth Saturday in the Coldwater Lions Invitational.
Fort Loramie scored 68 points to win, and Shawnee was second with 79. Delphos St. John’s scored 129 points for third. The Indians had 168 points out of 13 teams.
Minster scored 90 points to win the boys race, with Lincolnview (103) and Shawnee (110) second and third respectively. Fort Recovery scored 316 for 12th out of 18 teams.
Megan Diller was the top FRHS girl, as she placed 24th. Alexis Wendel took 28th, Hanna Metzger was 36th and Alyssa Heinrichs finished 37th. Caitlin Wetzel was the fifth runner in 43rd.
Drew Muhlenkamp hit the finish line in 23rd place Fort Recovery’s boys, and Jared Timmerman was 63rd. Connor Gower (74th), John Knapke (116th) and Jayden McEldowney (134th) also scored for the Indians.
Jay falls in finale
Jay County’s boys soccer team dropped its regular season finale Saturday, 6-2 to the Oak Hill Golden Eagles.
The Patriots (9-6) trailed 3-2 at halftime thanks to goals from Gio Perod and Gavin Muhlenkamp. In the final 40 minutes, however, they were not able to tie the game and allowed three more goals to the Golden Eagles.
Ian Ruiz made four saves in goal.
Jay County meets the Blackford Bruins in the sectional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Thursday at Yorktown.
FR beats ’Dogs
CELINA, Ohio — Abby Knapke had nine kills and Allysen Fullenkamp contributed five in leading the Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team past the Celina Bulldogs on Saturday, 25-18, 19-25, 25-17.
Brooklyn Jutte was third with four kills and Sophie Pearson had three kills. Amy Stammen led the team with seven aces, and Jutte chipped in four.
Knapke and Jutte each had a pair of blocks, and Faith Wendel ended with 11 assists.
Chiefs take second
East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade volleyball team was second Saturday as it hosted the East Jay Invitational.
The Chiefs beat West Jay (25-21, 25-18) and Bluffton (25-17, 25-8) before a loss to South Adams (25-16, 25-21).
East Jay’s seventh graders lost all three matches. Scores were not provided.
Sophie Saxman and Maggie Dillon totaled 18 service points for the eighth graders, and Saxman had 10 kills, which was second to Bella Denton. Dillon had a team-high 12 aces, and Brenna Haines finished with 18 digs.
Jordyn Hutzler, Cassi Petro, Jaelynn Lykins, Addison Denney and Alyssa Aker all had two kills for the seventh graders. Denney added six aces as Meredith Dirksen and Morgan DeHoff recorded six assists each.
