FORT RECOVERY — The Indians built a lead and then hung on for a win last week.

The offense struggled mightily against one of the top teams in the state Friday.

The Fort Recovery High School football team ran more plays than it had total offense, turned the ball over three times and gave up a safety in a 36-7 loss to the Marion Local Flyers at Barrenbrugge Athletic Park.

Marion Local (7-2, 6-1 Midwest Athletic Conference), which is ranked second in Division IV, scored on the opening drive of the game when Kyle Muhlenkamp connected with Brandon Fleck for a 12-yard touchdown four minutes into the contest.

The Flyers made it 14-0 in the second quarter when Muhlenkamp found Charles Huelsman from the 13 yard line with 10:44 before half.

Huelsman completed six of his 14 pass attempts for 160 yards. Huelsman caught four of those throws for 117 yards, 73 of which came on a third-quarter TD.

Three turnovers by Fort Recovery (3-6, 2-5 MAC) resulted in a total of 14 points in the second period.

Following a fumble, Grant Meier capped a five-play, 25-yard drive with a TD run from the 3, and then FRHS quarterback Clay Schmitz lost a fumble in the end zone that Matt Everman recovered for a touchdown as the Flyers entered halftime with a 28-0 lead.

Nearly midway through the third quarter Josh Muhlenkamp was tackled in the end zone for a safety as the Flyers scored 36 straight points to start the game.

Fort Recovery, which ran 42 plays for just 42 yards of total offense, got its only points on a 12-yard Schmitz pass to Gavin Thobe with 12 seconds left to play.

Schmitz was 11-of-19 through the air for 85 yards. The Indians had negative-43 yards rushing.

Marion Local, which is in a four-way tie for the MAC lead with Coldwater, Anna and Minster, finished with 280 yards of offense.

Fort Recovery closes its season on the road next week at Versailles (3-6, 2-5 MAC), while Marion Local hosts Division VI No. 4 Coldwater (7-2, 6-1 MAC) for at least a share of the conference championship.
