Jalyn Bruns and Shelby Stammen have carried the Indians for most of the season.
The former has the school record for both 9- and 18-hole matches.
They helped set the team record as well.
Bruns and Stammen were slightly off their game Monday while two others picked up the slack, but the Fort Recovery High School girls golf team came up short against the New Bremen Cardinals at Portland Golf Club.
“This is a good score for us,” said FRHS coach Joe Bruns, whose team dips to 1-3 in Midwest Athletic Conference play. “(It) is still our second-best score of the year. Even though I sound a little disappointed, it’s just my competitive nature.
“We did get defeated, but to keep things in perspective, as a team we’re working together and it’s a team sport.”
Alli Vaughn only made par once, doing os on the 260-yard, par-4 11th hole. After sandwiching triple bogeys on the par 5s around a bogey on the par-3 13th, Vaughn bogeyed her final four holes to finish with a career-best 48.
Kendra Dues, who chipped in for par on the 290-yard, par-4 16th, totaled 50 for the lowest score of her career as well.
Bruns had said during the match he was hoping at some point this season his third and fourth players — Vaughn and Dues, respectively — could bridge the gap between their averages and those of Jalyn Bruns and Stammen.
He got that Monday.
“This year Jalyn and Shelby have been by far our most consistent people,” he said. “Jalyn was quite a bit higher than her average. Shelby was right at her average so I was glad to see Alli and Kendra really step up.
“They almost dropped eight strokes off their average so I’m very pleased about that.”
Jalyn is Joe’s daughter, so it’s no surprise he was most critical of his offspring. He wasn’t happy with some decisions she made on the course which got her into some situations she doesn’t generally get into.
“I’d like to see our No. 1 play a little bit better tonight but you’re going to have those nights like that,” father said. “She got into some trouble, some penalty strokes that she doesn’t normally do.”
Despite the highest round of her season, Jalyn shot 48 to tie Vaughn for the team lead. Earlier this season Jalyn set the school record on for a 9-hole match with 36.
“There’s going to be nights like that,” Joe Bruns said.
Stammen rounded out the team score with 52.
“I’m glad to see Shelby Stammen hung together,” he said. “Had kind of a rough start but hung around to shoot about her average.”
Trisha Gaerke and Macy Brunswick also competed for the Indians, and they carded scores of 57 and 62, respectively.
Sarah Parker of New Bremen earned match medalist with her 3-over par 38.
With the sectional tournament just 15 days away — it’s Sept. 24 at Celina Lynx — Bruns is pleased with the way his team is coming together, that the other players on the team are helping push Bruns and Stammen at the top while also improving their own scores.
Lima Central Catholic and St. Henry are the favorites to grab two of the three district qualifying spots — the top three teams advance from sectional — and Bruns is hoping that over the next two weeks his team can continue to get better and make a run for that third spot.
“In our sectional there are two teams that are just head and shoulders above everybody,” he said. “That third spot … numerous teams could get that. It’s just a matter of getting four girls to play their average, maybe a couple of them playing better than their average.”
