A day after beating a conference rival, the Patriots came up short against a sectional foe.

Jay County High School’s boys tennis team lost to the Randolph Southern Rebels on Tuesday, 3-2.

Crosby Heniser and Simon Dirksen got singles victories as the only wins for the Patriots (4-3). Heniser, a sophomore, defeated fellow sophomore Tyler Fink by a 6-5, 6-2 margin at No. 1 singles. Dirksen, a freshman, grabbed a 6-0, 6-0 win against RSHS senior Tylor Holguin 6-0, 6-0.

Christian Romero dropped his No. 2 singles match to Jake Mifsud 6-4, 6-1.

Frankie Crump and Darius Esparza dropped the first set to Ethan Haines and Hagen Gambrel 6-3 at No. 2 doubles, and rallied to take the second 6-3, but fell in the decisive set 6-2 for the loss.

Sheldon Upp and Gavin Myers fell to Colton Fisher and Jake Good 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

In junior varsity action, Ralph Link grabbed a 6-4 victory, and Seth Degler won 6-3. Logan McGinnis and Allen Dues combined for a 6-2 doubles triumph.



Jay golfers win

Jay County’s girls golf team sent its seniors out with a win Tuesday as the Patriots took first place in a three-team match with Yorktown and Wes-Del at Portland Golf Club.

The Patriots, in their final home match of the season, totaled 200 for first place. Yorktown was seven strokes behind in second, and Wes-Del shot 209 for third.

Mackenzie Parks, one of three seniors on the team, shot 49, matching junior teammates Abby Huey and Raquel Wehrly for the squad’s lowest score. Eden Basford, another senior, shot 53 to complete the team total.

Tea Nichols, the third and final senior, also competed and she finished with 54.



Chiefs beat Jets

MONROE — The Jay County seventh grade football team shut out the host Adams Central Jets on Tuesday, 12-0.

AJ Myers put Jay County (2-1) on the board with a 50-yard punt return for a touchdown. Ben Crouch also found the end zone on a run.

Sean Bailey led the squad in rushing with 80 yards on nine carries.

Austin Schoenlien finished with two sacks, Corey Emery had one sack and Myers finished with three tackles for loss.



FRMS spikers split

DELPHOS, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams split matches with the St. John’s Blue Jays on Tuesday.

The eighth grade team won 25-19, 22-25, 25-17, and the seventh graders fell 13-25, 25-22, 27-25.

Mara Pearson led the eighth grade team with nine kills and Teigen Fortkamp tallied four aces. Chloe Bubp contributed eight digs.

Sara Fritz recorded five aces to lead the seventh grade squad. Kennedy Muhlenkamp and Emma Will had four aces each, as Will also tallied three kills.
