Reject road project; get a grocery store
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
I agree 100% with the recent letters I have read concerning conditions of roads and railroad track crossings.
I am all for repairs to U.S. 27 but disagree about removing stoplights, reducing to one lane and changing to reverse-angle parking.
There is too much traffic and semis to remove a lane. The semis pull in front of cars now, and removing a lane would create more accidents. There is no reason to change the parking system we have in place now. Angle parking is a thing of the past. Move forward, not backward.
Empty buildings need to be addressed. When entering Portland from the north, you see an empty factory, restaurant, old Walmart and Marsh store, and then more empty stores downtown ruined by flooding.
If I was visiting Portland and possibly relocating, my big question would be “where is the grocery store?” That should be a priority to entice newcomers to the community.
I feel my opinion matters and hope others will express their opinion as well.
