Patriot spikers fall to Warriors

WOODBURN — The first two went to the Warriors. The Patriots grabbed the third.

The visitors couldn’t get any more.

Jay County High School’s volleyball team lost to the host Woodlan Warriors on Thursday, 25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19.

It’s the fourth loss in the last six matches for the Patriots (7-4, 1-1 Allen County Athletic Conference).

Natalie Miles led Jay County with nine points and 12 digs. Hallie Fields was second in both kills (seven) and digs (11). She also had three blocks.

Sara Hemmelgarn and Madison Dirksen both contributed five kills, Alana Kunkler had two blocks and Pacie Denney racked up 28 assists.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 25-21, 25-12.

Lily Hedges had two kills and three blocks, Abbie Fields finished with three digs, two aces and one block, and Izzy Rodgers recorded eight digs and six assists.



Tribe clips Jays

FORT RECOVERY — The Fort Recovery volleyball team made easy work of the St. John’s Blue Jays on Thursday at Fort Site Fieldhouse, 25-11, 25-12, 25-18.

The Division IV No. 6 Indians (11-1, 3-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) are now tied for first in the MAC with Division III No. 4 Coldwater after St. Henry (8-1, 2-1 MAC), the top-ranked team in Division IV, knocked off No. 2 New Bremen (8-1, 2-1 MAC) on Thursday.

Whitley Rammel and Paige Fortkamp had 10 kills each for the Indians. Fortkamp also had three digs and Rammel tallied a pair of blocks. Olivia Patch followed with eight kills go to with her team-high three blocks. Paige Jutte tallied seven kills.

Chloe Showalter finished with 21 assists and Kierra Wendel had eight digs and six aces.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team also won, 25-10, 25-13.

Lilie Leuthold had five kills and Audra Bubp recorded seven aces.



Chiefs sweep Patriots

East Jay Middle School’s seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams swept the Heritage Patriots on Thursday.

The eighth graders won 25-5, 25-21, while the seventh graders grabbed a 25-14, 25-14 victory.

Bella Denton and Maggie Dillon had two kills each for the eighth graders (4-0). Brenna Haines led the team in aces (seven) and digs (six), while Sophie Saxman had six aces.

Meredith Dirksen and Jaelynn Lykins paced the seventh graders (3-1) with two kills apiece. Dirksen also had six aces, and Morgan DeHoff tallied three assists.



EJ tops Bellmont

DECATUR — The East Jay boys and girls cross country teams had identical scores in beating host Bellmont on Thursday.

The EJMS boys claimed the top four spots in their 17-43 win, and the girls earned a 17-44 triumph.

Cameron Clark (12 minutes, 5 seconds), Tony Wood (12:18), Jacob Monroe (12:44) and Creed Beiswanger (12:51) were first through fourth respectively for the Chief boys. Gabe Pinkerton completed the scoring with his seventh-place finish (13:25).

Natalie Carreno, Ayla Grabner and Alexis Sibray had the top three spots in the girls’ race. Carreno had a time of 13:09, and Grabner was 20 seconds behind. Sibray finished in 13:37.

Emily Manor had a time of 13:49.4 for fifth, and Paityn Wendel ended in 14:03 for sixth.



Football falls

MUNCIE — The Jay County middle school seventh grade football team fell to the Muncie Southside Panthers on Thursday, 20-13.

Sean Bailey carried the ball six times for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Carter Barton also had 60 yards on the ground, and AJ Myers totaled 40 rushing yards.

Tyler Ellsworth jumped on a loose ball for a fumble recovery.

The eighth grade contest was canceled because of weather.
