MONROEVILLE — Tony Wood and Natalie Carreno won their respective races.

They set new course records, too.

Wood and Carrento led the East Jay Middle School boys and girls cross country teams in a double dual with West Jay and host Heritage on Tuesday.

East Jay’s boys beat Heritage 19-43, and topped West Jay 15-45. West Jay defeated Heritage 26-29.

The Chief girls beat Heritage 15-50. West Jay did not qualify for a team score.

Wood finished with a time of 12 minutes, 1 second, to set a new course record. Jacob Monroe (13:03) led a contingent of four EJMS runners who placed third through sixth. Creed Beiswanger (13:06) was fourth, Timo Minnich (13:27) placed fifth and Carson Davis (14:19) finished sixth.

Jackson Edwards was the lead runner for West Jay as he was seventh in 14:25, one place and 25 seconds in front of teammate Liam Garringer. Trevon Huntington (15:41) took 10th, Aiden Stephens (16:58) placed 16th and Seth Bee (17:30) was 18th.

Carreno’s record time was 13:31 as she was the first of five consecutive EJMS girls to cross the finish line. Ayla Grabner (14:06) placed second, Alexis Sibray (14:18) ended third, Paityn Wendel (14:19) finished fourth and Aubrey Millspaugh (14:55) was fifth.

Hailey Ayala of West Jay was sixth in 15:15, Lucy Raines crossed the finish line ninth in 16:04 and Sara McClain was 15th in 19:01.



Jay thrashes Raiders

DUNKIRK — The Jay County middle school football team thrashed the Southern Wells Raiders on Tuesday at West Jay in a combined game of seventh and eighth grade teams.

Justin DeHoff had rushing touchdowns of 50 and 34 yards and threw a 30-yard TD pass to Sam Myers.

AJ Myers, Ben Crouch and Sam Myers all had rushing touchdowns as well.

Parker Nichols led the defense with a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. Sam Myers contributed eight tackles and three sacks.
