A local teacher will be honored as the best in the state.
Kathy Ayers, a Jay School Corporation art teacher, will be honored in November as Art Education Association of Indiana’s Art Teacher of the Year.
Ayers, a Portland resident, teaches art at Jay County High School and sponsors its art club and chapter of the National Art Honor Society. She has also been involved in Arts Place’s Arts in the Parks program, Kindergarten Prep School at Jay County Public Library and a variety of other art-related initiatives.
She will receive the award, for which she was nominated by her peers, during the Art Education Association of Indiana’s annual convention Nov. 7 through 10.
Hosting
Cornerstone Center for the Arts will host an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 for the “Creative Legacy” exhibit featuring art by Leon Crosby and Alex Hanson.
Crosby and Hanson are a teacher and student duo who worked together on a collection of Acrylic paintings with a focus on urban art. Crosby has been a teacher at Cornerstone for about six years.

Auditions set
Jay County Civic Theatre will hold auditions for its production of the musical “Frozen Jr.” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 30 and Oct. 2 at Arts Place, 131 E.?Walnut St., Portland.
The show is for performers 18-and-younger. Jason McGraw will direct the show, and Reid Knuth will be the musical director.
