COLDWATER, Ohio — The Indians pulled within one late in the first quarter.
It's as close as they got against the top-ranked team in the state.
The Fort Recovery High School football team gave up 29 consecutive points through the second and third quarters and wasn't able to catch up in a 43-21 loss to the Division VI No. 1 Coldwater Cavaliers on Friday night.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Indians after opening the season with a victory against Lehman Catholic.
Fort Recovery junior quarterback Clay Schmitz rumbled one yard for a touchdown with 2:02 to play in the first quarter to pull the Indians (1-4, 0-3 Midwest Athletic Conference) to 7-6 after Cobe Wendel's point-after-attempt was no good.
The Cavaliers (5-0, 3-0 MAC) covered 69 yards in six plays on their ensuing drive to pad the lead. Myles Blasingame scored from 2 yards out to kick off Coldwater's scoring stretch.
Nathan Grieshop followed with a 33-yard touchdown run, then Jake Hemmelgarn accounted for two more scores — one with his legs and the other with his arm — as the Cavs led 36-6 midway through the third quarter.
Hemmelgarn had 11 carries for 162 yards as Coldwater's leading rusher, and he also completed eight of his 13 pass attempts for 131 more yards, including an 8-yard TD to Ethan Post for the game's first score. Hemmelgarn connected with Zack McKibben for a 33-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter, then ran it in from the 15 with 7:52 to play in the period.
Fort Recovery ended the stretch as Derek Jutte scampered 80 yards for a score, and the 2-point conversion made it 36-14. But by then the damage had already been done.
Jutte finished with 13 carries for 112 yards, the bulk of which came on his long TD run.
Schmitz, who had a 9-yard touchdown toss to Gavin Thobe late in the fourth quarter, was 12-of-25 passing for 237 yards. Thobe had 31 yards on four catches. Regan Martin was Schmitz's favorite target as he caught four passes for 77 yards. Riley Pearson also had a 62-yard catch.
Fort Recovery looks to end its losing skid Friday as it hosts the Parkway Panthers (2-3, 0-3 MAC), which lost to Minster 39-7 Friday.
