Brian DeRome, a Jay County High School graduate and now a senior at Purdue University, was selected for special recognition as an Outstanding Future Educator by the Indiana Association for Colleges of Teacher Education.
DeRome had been doing his student teaching at Delta High School prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was nominated for the award by technology teacher Ron Curry at Delta and Dr. Paul Asunda, assistant professor of engineering/technology education at Purdue.
A member of Technology and Engineering Education Collegiate Association, DeRome was 2019 TEECA robotics national champion.
Brown bag
Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland will be serving a brown bag dinner with submarine sandwiches on Monday, April 13.

Museum work
Nancy Knapke at the Fort Recovery State Historical Museum said that the museum’s off-season allowed for some improvements.
A large window on the west side of the museum’s main floor has been replaced, and lighting has been improved for the Bubp Prehistoric Experience Exhibit Area on the third floor.
New LED lighting designed by Dan Schoen of the Home Idea Center makes the pictorial timeline much easier to read.
Takes third
East Jay Middle School student Aubrey Millspaugh, daughter of Tim and Kristen Millspaugh, Portland, recently took third place the Indiana North Optimist essay scholarship contest based on a theme of “Is Optimism the Key to Achieving the Dreams You Imagine?”
She advanced to the district competition by winning the local contest held by the Portland Breakfast Optimist Club. Thirteen clubs sent entries to the district competition which was judged by two doctoral students in English from Ball State University as well as an Indianapolis area special education teacher with a degree in writing.
Rescheduled
The Bryant High School Alumni Association has rescheduled its alumni banquet for Sept. 12 because of the pandemic.
It had originally been scheduled for May 16.
