To the editor:
As everyone here locally were easing into this “stay-at-home” action, one of the things that really kicked it in was local factories and businesses shutting down.
This left a lot of people from this area suddenly unemployed and unsure of what to do.
All of these unemployed people now need to get signed up on unemployment, right?
Not so easy for some. It may be hard for some to believe, but not everyone in today’s world has a home computer, laptop, Wi-Fi, etc. And a lot of cell phones will not work for this because they are the wrong format.
The state saw fit to remove our Portland Work One office because apparently it wasn’t needed. The Muncie office staff was all working from home and couldn’t help. The Indianapolis office would just leave you on hold forever until you gave up.
So where do you turn?
Wait, the local library. They have computers and internet.
Nope!
Their thoughts on helping their community was to close their doors. Understandable, considering the whole country was demanding we avoid each other. But now where do these people go. Every door that they need help from is now closed. Or so they thought.
There were a couple local businesses that opened their doors to people in need of this very thing. FCC opened its doors to help its employees. I myself got my help at Matt’s Garage.
What a blessing to have someone you don’t know go out of their way to make sure you are OK. These people stepped up in a time of need and confusion and deserve to be recognized for it.
Don’t get me wrong, I am very grateful for our medical community and our local police and fire departments. But sometimes the help you need will come from your own community.
God Bless those who put others first. I for one, am very grateful.
