Two Tyson Foods employees at its pork plant in Columbus Junction, Iowa, have died of COVID-19.
The Associated Press reported that the meatpacking plant has been idled since April 6, when the company announced that more than two dozen workers were infected with the virus.
The company said Monday that it would continue the plant’s suspension this week after more workers tested positive.
Tyson Foods Inc. is the parent of Tyson Mexican Original of Portland.
Expansion OK’d
Plans for a 38,000-square-foot expansion of Poseidon Barge in Berne won approval this week from the Berne Plan Commission
Construction is expected to start this month and be completed by the end of July.
Poseidon’s operation is located at 725 Parr Road.
Close temporarily
A McDonald’s restaurant in China was closed temporarily after it attempted to ban black people because of the pandemic.
Located in Guangzhou, the restaurant displayed a sign reading, “We’ve been informed that from now on black people are not allowed to enter the restaurant,” the BBC reported Tuesday.
McDonald’s told the New York Post that the store was quickly shuttered when it became aware of the disturbing notice and that the restaurant’s apparent ban on black people was “not representative” of the company’s values.
Only a handful
Only a handful of COVID-19 testing centers at Walmart, Walgreens and CVS Health are now operating.
Business Insider said Walmart currently has four coronavirus test sites open.
It plans to have more than 20 coronavirus testing sites operating in at least 10 states by the end of April.
Walgreens has said it was planning to open 15 drive-thru testing locations across seven states.
The company hoped to be able to test up to 3,000 people per day.
CVS has opened three rapid drive-thru testing locations in Georgia, Massachusetts and Rhode Island in collaboration with federal and state officials, a company spokesperson told Business Insider.
Lowest again
Though unemployment rates are rising due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mercer County posted the lowest jobless rate in Ohio before the virus hit.
February’s rate for Mercer County was 3.1%. The Ohio rate for the same period was 4.1%.
Deal complete
First Bank of Berne’s acquisition of Adams County Credit Union is now complete.
First announced in October, the acquisition has been under review by regulatory authorities.
The credit union has been headquartered in Monroe.

Colorful restaurant entrepreneur Jimmie Schindler died March 26 in Fort Wayne. A native of Geneva, he owned Jimmie’s Pizza in Portland in the 1970s and 1980s.
He later owned the Bandido’s restaurant chain, including the popular Bandido’s in Portland, and was often on hand to greet diners.
Geneva selected
The town of Geneva has been selected for a “Make It Hour Own Mural Fest” in northeast Indiana, the Adams County Economic Development Corporation has announced.
Plans call for murals to be created in 11 counties, with the Adams County mural to be in Geneva.
Artists can apply to participate at www.NEImuralfestival.com through the end of May.
A jury will then select artists who will create murals over an 11-day period from Sept. 8 through 18.
The event is sponsored by Parkview Health, 3Rivers Federal Credit Union, Ambassador Enterprises and Avangrid Foundation.
Making sanitizer
POET is producing ethanol-based sanitizer at its South Dakota biorefinery to distribute to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, firefighters, emergency medical services and other frontline workers.
POET is the parent of POET Biorefining-Portland.
“A great strength of the American economy is its ability to adapt. I am grateful POET has shifted production to much needed hand sanitizer for first responders, including Sioux Falls police, fire rescue and EMS personnel. Sioux Falls is fortunate to have a great community partner and corporate citizen like POET headquartered here” Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken said in a prepared statement.
POET partnered with local companies, including Senproco Inc. to bottle the sanitizer and Cimarron to provide the labels.
