Derek Lochtefeld turned in the lowest score for the Indians.

All but one Trojan posted lower totals.

Fort Recovery High School’s boys golf team opened its dual match schedule with a 159-184 loss to the Botkins Trojans on Thursday at Portland Golf Club.

Lochtefeld’s 44 was the team lead for the Indians (0-1), who got matching scores of 45 from Isaac LeFevre and Carson Rammel. Zander Kunkler’s 50 rounded out the team score.

Carson Siefring (55) and Cole Muhlenkamp (59) also competed but did not factor into the team score.

Isaac Cisco of Botkins shot an even par 35 to earn match medalist honors.

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity team edged Botkins, 228-230.

Russell Gehle’s 51 was the lowest of any player. Gavin Faller followed with 56, as A.J. Romer and Seth Lochtefeld had 60 and 61 respectively. Matthew Romer’s 62 did not make the team total.



Indians set record

GENEVA — Jalyn Bruns tied her individual record and the Fort Recovery girls golf team set a new school record by beating South Adams 171-250 Thursday at Wabash Valley Golf Club.

Bruns, who earlier this year broke her own 18-hole record, shot an even-par 36. Her round included a birdie on the par-5 second hole and the par-4 fourth. Her only mishaps were bogeys on the par-3 third and par-4 fifth holes.

Alli Vaughn was second for the Indians with 41, three strokes ahead of Shelby Stammen. Paige Bihn shot 50 for the Tribe’s No. 4 score.

Trisha Gaerke competed as well, and she turned in a 56.



Jay falls to Bearcats

MUNCIE — Jay County’s girls golf team lost to the Muncie Central Bearcats on Thursday, 180-195 at Crestview Golf Club.

Raquel Wehrly set a new career-best score by finishing with a 43, one stroke ahead of Erika Heitkamp’s 44, which tied her best score. Wehrly made par four times, including back-to-back on par-4 fifth and sixth holes. She was also even on the par-4 first hole and par-3 third.

Abby Huey was third for Jay County with 47, and Jacqueline Smith had 61 to round out the team score.

Heitkamp and Huey made par twice each.

Muncie Central’s Teddi Bishop was match medalist with her 1-under-par 35.

Optimist wins title

Alyssa Wendel’s grand slam helped power Optimist to a 19-12 victory against The ROCK Church on Thursday to win the tournament championship in Portland Junior League’s Rookie softball division.

Wendel also contributed a double, two singles and four runs in the win. Alieah Cox collected a double, three singles and four runs, while Ali Clark and Brinley Steed had four singles each. Clark also scored four times. Bella Barnett, Chloe Yates and Derynn Thobe each hit three singles for ROCK. Barnett added three runs and Yates scored twice. Madilyn Curtis doubled and singled as Ellie Wiggins hit two singles. Both Curtis and Wiggins reached home twice.
