RICHMOND — The Patriots began the opener a little slowly.
The second half carried them to victory.
Jay County High School’s girls soccer team scored two second-half goals Monday in downing the host Richmond Red Devils 2-0.
Sophomore Mara Bader and senior Payton McCoy both scored for the Patriots (1-0). Gabi Bilbrey, a sophomore, notched an assist.
Junior goalkeeper Tricia Ison turned away five Red Devil shots to record her first shutout of the season and the fourth of her career.
Kunkler fires ace
DELPHOS, Ohio — Zander Kunkler fired the first ace of his career Monday in the Fort Recovery boys golf team’s 160-182 loss to the St. John’s Blue Jays in the Midwest Athletic Conference opener at Delphos Country Club.
Kunkler, a junior, used a 9-iron on the 153-yard, par-3 second hole to record his hole-in-one.
Derek Lochtefeld led the Indians (0-2, 0-1 MAC) with a 41, and Carson Rammel was second with 44. Isaac LeFevre shot 48 and Kunkler had 49 to complete the Tribe’s team score.
Russell Gehle also shot 56 but did not factor into the team score.
Jack Gerker of the Blue Jays shot 38 to earn match medalist honors.
Indians top Delphos
Fort Recovery’s girls golf team knocked off the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays 198-208 Monday morning at Portland Golf Club.
Jalyn Bruns made par three times on her way to claim match medalist with a 45, two strokes ahead of Shelby Stammen. Alli Vaughn birdied the par-4 fourth hole and finished with 50.
Paige Bihn and Kendra Dues both shot 56 to complete the team score.
Trisha Gaerke’s 58 did not contribute to the team total.
