MUNCIE — The Patriots weren’t able to upset the Eagles for the second straight season.

Jay County High School’s volleyball team lost to the host Delta Eagles on Thursday, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19.

Madison Dirksen turned in a team-best 12 kills to lead the Patriots (1-1), and Alana Kunkler was second with eight kills. Natalie Miles contributed six kills and had 13 digs, the latter of which were second to Grace Brewster’s 17 digs.

Dirksen also contributed four total blocks, and Pacie Denney collected 21 assists in the loss.

Last season, Jay County defeated Delta, which was ranked sixth in Class 3A, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 26-24. It was the first time the Patriots had beaten the Eagles in more than three decades.



Bruns breaks own record

CELINA — Jalyn Bruns continues to have a special season.

Bruns broke her own school record for a 9-hole round in leading the Fort Recovery girls golf team past the Parkway Panthers 188-253 on Thursday at Celina Lynx Golf Club.

Bruns, a junior, began her round with back-to-back birdies before bogeying the par-3 fourth hole. She then hit par on consecutive rounds to sit at 1-under, and bogeyed the par-5 fifth hole. She sandwiched a birdie on the eighth hole between par on seven and nine to finish with a 1-under par 35 and earn match medalist honors.

Bruns’ previous record was 36, which she set as a sophomore and matched on Aug. 13.

Shelby Stammen shot 46 for the Tribe’s second-best score, and Alli Vauhn totaled 48 for third. Kendra Dues shot 59 to complete the Indians’ score.



Indians get first win

Fort Recovery’s boys golf team got its first win of the season Thursday, defeating the Parkway Panthers 179-186 at Portland Golf Club.

It was the best score of the season for the Indians (1-2, 1-1 Midwest Athletic Conference).

Carson Rammel led the Indians with 42, one ahead of Isaac LeFevre. Derek Lochtefeld and Zander Kunkler completed the team score with 45 and 49, respectively.

Parkway’s Adam Stephenson was match medalist with his 41.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost to Delta, 25-24, 25-19. Bella Denton led the Patriots (1-1) with seven kills, and Madison Brunswick was one behind. Lauren Brewster finished with 14 digs, and Sophie Saxman tallied 15 assists.



Tennis loses

OSSIAN — Jay County’s boys tennis team fell to 0-2 on the season Thursday with a 4-1 loss to the host Norwell Knights.

Crosby Heniser got the only win for the Patriots, defeating Krew Bussel 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in their No. 1 singles contest. Simon Dirksen lost to Ethan Ottinger at No. 2 singles by a 6-1, 6-1 margin, while cousin Abraham Dirksen fell 6-4, 6-4 to Grant Mishler at No. 3 singles.

Austin Dirksen and Sam Myers gave Kaden Graft and Brasen Chaney a tough first set but lost their No. 2 doubles match 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. At No. 1 doubles, Darius Esparza and Gavin Myers lost to Evan Zimmer and Augie Mann 6-0, 6-0.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also lost, 3-1. Soichiro Oyama won his singles match, 8-1.
