Thirty years ago this week, the Jay County High School volleyball team opened with a double dose of wins.

The Aug. 22, 1990, edition of The Commercial Review featured coverage of the Patriots’ sweep of a three-team event against Adams Central and Union City.

The pair of victories came despite the squad not playing quite as well as their coach would have liked.

“We did not begin the match anywhere near the level I thought we would,” said coach Dave Bergman. “We were nervous, we played reserved.”

But, after they dropped the first set 10-5 to Adams Central, they bounced back. Led by the attack efforts of Tracy Nixon, the serving of Andrea Jimerson and Cindy Moser and the defense of Tracy Enyart, Ruth Long and Mandi Shumaker they rallied for the 10-15, 15-6, 15-8 victory and then finished off Union City 15-9, 15-7.

Nixon, a senior, racked up 24 kills over the two matches, including 16 against Adams Central. She also had 15 blocks.

Jimerson racked up 17 service points in her high school debut, going 12-for-12 with nine points against Union City. She also served the final four points in the win over Adams Central.
