Cristian Marentes scored two second-half goals in leading the Jay County High School boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory Tuesday against the New Castle Trojans.

It was the first win of the season for the Patriots (1-2), who return to action at 5 p.m. Thursday against Delta and 10 a.m. Saturday against Yorktown. Both games are at home.

After a scoreless first half for both teams, Marentes got his third goal of the season on an assist from Gio Perod. Marentes tallied his team-leading fourth mark on a Kaleb Meadows helper.

Ian Ruiz turned away four New Castle shots.

Jay County lost 5-1 to the Trojans during the regular season last year, then fell by a 1-0 margin in the sectional semifinal.



Patriots above .500

Jay County’s volleyball team moved above .500 for the first time since a season-opening win with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 victory against the Winchester Golden Falcons on Tuesday.

Madison Dirksen fired a game-high 16 kills for Jay County (2-1), and Natalie Miles complemented her with nine kills while turning in a team-best 22 digs. Alana Kunkler tallied five kills. Izzy Rodgers racked up 18 service points and 17 assists, both of which led the squad.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also improved to 2-1 on the year with a 25-9, 25-18 win.

Bella Denton led the team with five kills as Laila Waddell and Madison Brunswick had three each. Joske Herndon collected 10 assists.



Tribe sweeps ’Riders

ST. MARYS, Ohio — The Fort Recovery volleyball team opened its 2020 campaign Tuesday by sweeping the St. Marys Memorial Roughriders, 25-19, 25-15, 25-17.

Paige Fortkamp carried the offense with her 10 kills, and Whitley Rammel was second with eight kills. Marissa Gaerke contributed six kills and led the team with eight digs.

Kierra Wendel was a perfect 20-for-20 on her serves and collected four aces, and Hope Wendel set up the offense to the tune of 19 assists.

Lilie Leuthold and Rammel both assisted on four blocks.

Junior varsity stats were not provided.

FR boys win again

Fort Recovery’s boys golf team won for the second consecutive match on Tuesday, moving above .500 for the first time this season in topping the Lehman Catholic Cavaliers 196-257 at Portland Golf Club.

Carson Rammel shot 42 to lead the Indians and earn match medalist honors, while Derek Lochtefeld was second with 45. Russell Gehle and Cole Muhlenkamp both had matching scores of 46 to complete the team total for the Indians (3-2).

Isaac LeFevre had a round of 49 and Zander Kunkler shot 60, but they did not factor into the Tribe’s score.



Boggs, boys win

Joseph Boggs crossed the finish line in first place on Tuesday, helping the Jay County Junior High boys cross country team begin its inaugural season by beating Wes-Del and Delta at Hudson Family Park.

Jay County, which had three of the top four spots, scored 29 points. Wes-Del had 43 for second and Delta totaled 50 for third.

The Patriot girls were second with 33 points, one shy of Delta. Wes-Del had 61 points for third.

Boggs won with a time of 13 minutes, 35 seconds. Gabe Pinkerton was runner-up. Creed Beiswanger finished fourth. Seth Bee (10th) and Max Klopfenstein (12th) completed the JCMS team total.

Alexis Sibray (14:40) and Ayla Grabner were first and second, respectively, for the Patriot girls. Emily Manor (ninth), Emily Young (10th) and Paityn Wendel (11th) also scored for Jay County.



8th graders win

GAS CITY — The Jay County Junior High eighth grade volleyball team moved to 2-0 on the season Tuesday with a 25-15, 25-16 victory over host RJ Baskett.

Kiley Williams led the offense with two kills and four aces. Heavyn Willoughby finished with three aces while Jozey Shimp and Brenna Bailey had two aces each.

Meredith Dirksen had three assists and an ace.

Scores and stats for the seventh grade contest were not provided.
