Their faces are obscured by the now-ubiquitous masks. But they’re there.

We’re talking about the volunteers from teenager to older adults who are working this week at the various food stands during the Tri-State Antique Engine and Tractor Show.

They’re in their stands sweating away during a sweltering week.

Many locals may not attend the show this week because they don’t want to be in the crowds at Jay County Fairgrounds this week.

For those who do plan to take part, please stop and support the various local vendors.

The Optimist, Lions and Elks stands are all open and selling their whole-hog sausage, Lionburgers, brats and assortment of other treats we typically enjoy each summer. And they need our support.

The coronavirus pandemic has been hard on everyone. That includes the service groups, who depend on revenue brought in during the Jay County Fair, Tri-State show and other major fairgrounds events.

Those funds go not to the members, but rather to a long list of local causes and organizations that would struggle to survive without them.

So, if you’re headed to the fairgrounds tonight or tomorrow, enjoy the puttering engines and wide variety of tractors. And while you’re at it, stop by and visit one (or more) of the local stands.

The volunteers — and your taste buds — will appreciate it. — R.C.
