FORT RECOVERY — The Flyers have won seven state championships in the last eight years.

At the end of three quarters Friday, the Indians had a seven-point lead on them.

But a team used to winning its last game of the season would not allow itself to lose its first.

The Fort Recovery High School football team gave up 16 fourth-quarter points to Marion Local as it dropped its season opener 23-14.

The Indians (0-1, 0-1 Midwest Athletic Conference), who have never beaten Marion Local in 26 tries, carried a 14-7 lead into the fourth quarter on the power of a Derek Jutte touchdown and a Clay Schmitz TD pass to Cale Rammel. But it took just three plays and a point-after run for the defending Division VI state champions to pull ahead.

The Flyers (1-0, 1-0 MAC) kept the ball on the ground, handing first to Drew Seitz for 13 yards and then to Dylan Fleck for a 1-yard loss before Tate Hess ran in for a 5-yard touchdown. Seitz carried the 2-point conversion for a 15-14 advantage.

Fort Recovery gave up the ball on a fourth-and-1 try on its ensuing drive, giving the ball to the Flyers at its own 29-yard line. Marion Local took advantage, with Seitz scoring on another 5-yard run and quarterback Carson Griesdorn tossing to Peyton Otte for another 2-pointer.

Each of the Indians’ last two possessions ended in turnovers.

Fort Recovery had jumped on the Flyers early, forcing a three-and-out and then needing just three plays to get on the scoreboard. A 36-yard pass from Schmitz to Regan Martin was the key to the short drive, setting up Jutte’s 5-yard scoring run.

After Marion Local pulled even at halftime, the Indians made the most of their first possession of the third quarter. They marched down the field from their own 15-yard line with four plays of more than 10 yards, including the capping 20-yard touchdown pass from Schmitz to Rammel. Their 14-7 lead stood until the Flyers asserted themselves in the final quarter.

Seitz paced the Marion Local rushing attack with 73 yards on 19 carries. Griesdorn was 8-of-16 passing for 115 yards and a 26-yard TD to Charles Hulesman that tied the game at 7-7 late in the first half.

Schmitz handled the bulk of the offense for Fort Recovery, going 16-of-22 through the air for 167 yards. Jutte picked up 38 yards on 10 rushing attempts.

Gaven Thobe racked up 13 tackles to lead the Tribe defense while also forcing a fumble.

The Indians will seek their first victory of the shortened six-game season Friday when they visit Parkway.
