All honor flights are suspended.
The National Honor Flight Network announced this week that it is suspending all Honor Flights through the end of April
The organization provides flights to veterans and a companion to visit Memorial sites in Washington, D.C.
The suspension includes the cancellation of an April 28 flight from Fort Wayne through Honor Flight Northeast Indiana. Several Jay County residents have been involved in Honor Flights through the organization.
“We are confronted with a high degree of uncertainty concerning travel in 2021,” said Honor Flight Northeast Indiana president Dennis Covert in a press release. “The Board of Directors of Honor Flight Northeast Indiana is reviewing the situation to determine possible courses of action for re-scheduling the April 28, 2021, Honor Flight from Fort Wayne.”
Show continues
The Alcove Artists + Friends Holiday Show is on display at Arts Place in Portland.
Alcove, a group of visual and performing artists from Portland and the surrounding area, will have artwork in a variety of media on display. The exhibit runs through Dec. 30.
It is open during Arts Place’s regular hours — 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday.
For more information, call Arts Place at (260) 726-4809.
Program launched
LifeStream Services is offering a new program for grandparents raising grandchildren and other adults providing “kinship care.”
The group — Parenting a Second Time Around — is an educational support group developed by the Cornell University Cooperative Extension. It includes a series of workshops dealing with rebuilding families, child development, living with teens and legal issues. They are free and can be done in-person or virtually.
Those interested in hosting or participating in the program should contact Angie Jenkins at [email protected] or (765) 759-1121.
Hunters can help
Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry announced that it is continuing the “Meat” the Need initiative in which hunters can donate their large game to help local food banks.
Hunters who are interested in donating wild game (deer, elk and buffalo) can do so by visiting a participating processor, including Adair Processing, Fisher Packing and Wright Brothers Buckstop in Jay County. (Hunters should call ahead, as space may be limited.) There is no charge to the hunter.
More than 1.7 million pounds of deer and livestock have been donated over the last 10 years.
Hosting Whoville
Jay County Public Library will host “Whoville’s Joy of Giving Kids Shopping Night” from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
The event is for children ages 4 through third grade who will get to “buy” a gift for two family members. They must complete four tasks — check out a Christmas book, make a Christmas card for local retirement home residents, write a letter to Santa and take a selfie with the Grinch at the library — to earn a ticket to get into Whoville. They will then get to choose from a variety of gifts, and the library’s Whoville helpers will help them with wrapping.
Parents will not be allowed while children are shopping. Reservations are required by calling (260) 726-7890.
Sessions available
MDwise is offering informational sessions for those who have health coverage through the Healthy Indiana Plan, as those individuals have until Dec. 15 to change their plans.
Virtual events will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Dec. 10 and 15.
