FORT RECOVERY — The Indians put up a late fight for the second straight home game.
This time, they couldn’t pull off a conference comeback.
Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball had its best offensive effort of the night during the fourth quarter but the Indians fell short in a 44-41 Midwest Athletic Conference loss to the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays.
It marked the first MAC loss of the year for the Indians (4-3, 2-1 MAC), who are defending conference champions and lost one league game last year as well.
St. John’s (3-3, 1-1 MAC), had a three-point lead after each of the first three quarters and pushed the advantage to eight points, 34-26, with one quarter to play.
Kierra Wendel scored five and Mara Pearson had four as part of the Tribe’s 15-point fourth quarter, but the Blue Jays went 6-of-8 from the free-throw line to put the game away down the stretch.
Alli Vaughn had a game-high 17 points, and Pearson was second with eight points. Wendel finished with seven points.
Tigers top Jay
Jay County’s seventh and eighth grade boys basketball teams both lost to the Bluffton Tigers on Thursday by a combined three points.
The eighth graders (3-2, 1-2 Allen County Athletic Conference) lost 26-24, and the seventh grade team (1-4) dropped a 31-30 game.
Kade Sommers scored eight points to lead the eighth graders, while Ben Crouch poured in 17 points in the losing effort for the seventh grade team.
