Obituary

Edward “Jack” Dunn Cummings passed peacefully at home on Dec. 26, 2020, because of complications of kidney failure. He was COVID-19 negative.

Ed “Jack” was born at home in Jackson Township, Randolph County, on Oct. 19, 1933, to Edward and Mary (Dunn) Cummings of Saratoga.

Edward graduated from Jackson (Indiana) High School in 1951 where he played basketball and baseball. Both teams went to state finals.

He married Elsie Ilene (Rhoades) on June 28, 1953, and they raised five children. He worked as a farmer and welder, delivered step vans, and worked as as an over-the-road truck driver. He served in the U.S. Army in the artillery division from 1954 to 1956 in El Paso,Texas, and Camp Stewart, Georgia.  

Edward attended Clearcreek Church. He also was a member of the American Legion. He served 10 years as a volunteer fireman in Ward Township.

He enjoyed socializing over coffee at the American Legion in Ridgeville. His extensive knowledge of history and travel made conversation easy with each and every one. He enjoyed family and watching the grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the many activities in which they were involved. Jack and Ilene traveled coast to coast, as well as to countries in Europe, Africa and South America.  

He is survived by his wife, Ilene, of Saratoga; children Alan and Becky Cummings of Union City, Susan and Gary Peterson of Farmland, Linda and Bob Sprunger of Union City, Karen and Ron Bailey of Union City, and Sherry and Grayson Cox of Winchester; grandchildren Jack (Ashley) Cummings of Anaheim, California, Trent (Robin) Peterson of Winchester, Kelsey (J) Harris of Yulee, Florida, Jenelle (Glen) LeMonds of Toutle, Washington, Deborah (Matt) Collins of Union City, Ronda (Rusty) Oliver of Union City, Sarah Cox of Fishers, Grant (Sami) Cox of Lynn, Gavin Cox of State College, Pennsylvania, and Stacy Cox of Winchester; great-grandchildren Olivia Shawver of Winchester, Kyan and Kaveri Harris of Yulee, Florida, Elizabeth and Cole LeMonds of Toutle, Washington, Miranda, Alexander and Katelyn Collins of Union City, and Elsie and Kipton Oliver of Union City.  

A service to celebrate Ed’s life will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at Reichard Funeral Home in Union City with Pastor Tom Sells officiating. The burial will follow at Lisbon Cemetery. Friends and family may call from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service.

Because of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requirements, masks will be required.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ward Township Volunteer Fire Department.
