The Indians are the favorites.

Fort Recovery High School’s girls basketball team was named the No. 1 seed in the Division IV Wapakoneta district Sunday, giving it a bye through the opening round of the tournament.

The Indians, who were 13th in last week’s Division IV poll voting, will play in the sectional championship game at 6:15 p.m. Feb. 22 at Bath against the winner of a Feb. 18 opening-round game between fifth-seeded St. Henry and 11th-seeded Perry. The winner will advance to the district semifinal at Wapakoneta.

Other first-round matchups in the 14-team district group are:
Parkway vs. Ridgemont
Upper Scioto Valley vs. No. 2 seed Marion Local
Lima Central Catholic vs. Waynesfield-Goshen
New Knoxville vs. Ada
New Bremen vs. Hardin Northern
No. 3 seed Minster also got a bye and will play the Rockford/Ridgemont winner.

JC freshmen fall
NEW CASTLE — The Jay County High School freshman boys basketball team stumbled in the third quarter Monday in a 53-43 loss to the New Castle Trojans.

Despite getting points from only three players, the Patriots trailed by just two at halftime. But New Castle outscored them 16-8 in the third quarter en route to the win.

Josh Dowlen poured in 26 points for JCHS, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Blake Bogenschutz followed with six points, and Brady Davis and Owen Ransom added five apiece.

Eagle eighth wins
West Jay Middle School’s eighth grade boys basketball team picked up its 11th victory Monday by a 49-37 score over the visiting Monroe Central Golden Bears.
The seventh grade team lost 37-35 on a last-second shot.

WJMS’s sixth grade squads also played Monday, with the A team falling 34-15 to East Jay and the B team losing 30-22.

Parker Nichols racked up 21 points to lead the East Jay eighth graders, who are now 11-6. Ryan Cross added 10 points.

Ben Crouch’s 18 points were the team high for the seventh grade Eagles. Eli Goodspeed was next with 10.

Carter Fugiett’s seven points led the sixth grade A team while Kamdyn Carter had nine points for the B team.
